when selecting majors in commerce, how many do you pick? i'm not really familar with majors/minors/units/credit etc so have uncertainties on:

how many majors are picked, how many minors, what are the difference between each, and, do you need a major AND a minor..

in arts, out of say the uac guide listing areas of study ranging from arabic studies to gender studies etc, how many of these do you pick

what are units of study and what would i need to know about them at this stage?

I really don't think there's any specific major/minor combination requirement set out in B.Arts/Commerce like there is maybe with B.Economic and Social Sciences. Usually a minor is just first year and second year units/subjects (so maybe four) and majors are usually six units after first year study.. it varies though. In economics+business and arts almost all units are 6 credit points each. So full time you would do 4 subjects a semester- two semesters, 48 cp per year. So there are specific credit point limits for each course, and you work out your majors/minors around that.

I'll be beginning second year B.Economics now and I only decided on what I was going to major in (with economics) at the end of this year. What most first year commerce students I know did was just complete all core units in first year (because B.commerce has heaps).. like acct1001 and acct1002, econ1001 and econ1002, which sets you up to major in maybe accounting, economics or finance by second year. Really most students only get specific about what they want to study by second year. But I think in a combined degree it also depends upon which arts units you choose- I think there are limited restrictions upon how many units with commerce/ from column A or B etc. (languages, gender studies..). You can do up to 3 majors all up, I think. Well thats what I'm doing. Ok take my majors for an example.

In commerce I'm planning to major in marketing, maybe an extended major = 48 Credit points.

In Arts I'm doing 72 credit points of Table A units (major in sociology) and 60 credit points of Table B units (Psychology, which is a science, therefore not really an arts major)...which adds up to 144 credit points all together.

If you do Arts/Commerce you get to play around with 240 credit points in total...so that leaves me with

240 - 144 - 48 - 42 (7 core compulsory units x 6 cr pnts each) = 6 credit points left over....which means I have one spare unit to choose as an elective (as most subjects are worth 6 credit points each).


Yeah, take cimboms advice and read the handbook. There are several rules you have to follow to qualify for the degree/s. I hope that what I've said is right otherwise my degree is fucked up. OR you can call the econ + bus faculty and they do an alright job at explaining things after you talk to a few people. 02 9351 3076

Can one still be recognised for postgraduate studies (i.e. a PhD) if they do an english major in the arts subjects of a commerce (liberal studies) degree?
