Order of Australia Association Foundation Prizes at the University of New South Wales for 2006

The Order of Australia Association Foundation is funding 2 prizes of $40,000 each to a 2nd Year Science and an Arts & Social Science student who, in the first year of their tertiary studies demonstrated high academic achievement, and the potential to become outstanding Australians. The purpose of the prizes is to assist promising students who might otherwise have considerable difficulty in proceeding with their studies beyond first year and thus not achieve their potential for the benefit of Australia. The prizes will pay the student’s fees and accommodation where applicable, and the balance will form one lump sum payable to the student in 2006. Prize recipients will also be offered the opportunity of an ongoing high level mentor relationship with a volunteer member of the Association.

To recognise the importance of the prizes in assisting the selected young Australians to achieve their potential in our society, the prizes will be presented by the Patron-in-Chief of the Foundation, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffrey AC CVO MC (Retd) Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia in an award ceremony at Government House Canberra in late 2006

Students from the University of Melbourne, the University of Western Australia, the University of Queensland, the University of Tasmania, and Victoria University of Technology have received similar awards in 2004 and 2005.

Each Faculty will nominate 3 "candidates" as a short list for each prize and forward these to a central selection committee made up of a senior university officer from each of the participating universities across Australia. The central committee will recommend one individual for each of the 2 UNSW prizes to the Board of the Order of Australia Association Foundation.

Selection Criteria

The University has been asked to seek nominations from students who have completed their first year, using the following statement as a guide, and by conducting an income assessment* to ensure the prizes go to students who will most benefit from assistance.

“Those we seek to assist should be young Australian citizens who have shown they have the potential to achieve if given a helping hand at this stage of their career/vocational development. High academic/vocational training achievement, demonstrated qualities of leadership, initiative, willingness to be involved in community affairs, sporting prowess, communication skills and tenacity of purpose are but some of the qualities we suggest for Prize winners. International students are ineligible as applicants must be Australian citizens aged between 18 and 25 with, in exceptional circumstances, a few being up to 27 years of age. Also, it will be important that the winners demonstrate that our prizes go to those "from all walks of life"

Closing date for applications: Monday 26 June 2006.
Application forms are available online or can be picked up from Student Central. Alternatively, you can send an email to j.murdoch@unsw.edu.au.

* Similar guidelines to those used for income assessment of Commonwealth Learning Scholarships are suggested.

What kind of marks would you be looking at for this? (just curious) Anyone applying?

What a joke. Science yes, but why not engineering or medicine or something that might benefit large numbers of people, rather than somebody who's going to go on and study the history of the wheelchair or the place of women in greek society or something in a similar vein.
