At USyd, even though the SRC (and NUS) appears to be dominated by the young Labor factions (an educated guess) and the socialists are forever 'selling' their wares, there is still a considerable number of young Liberals... However, those involved in such activities are in the minority themselves, so it would be unwise to just assume that you are the only student on the right at UWS. Given that Australia at large has apparently shifted to the right, it would be safe to assume that such a shift has also taken place within the student body... The silent majority is just as prevalent at uni as it is within the wider Australian population.

I know that politcal involvement is more complex than the young labor/liberals groups and the socialists, but I was only trying to illustrate my point.

Hmm i just found it interesting, opening speech of todays orientation was organising a protest march, inside my student diary are two anti-howard illustrations, the feminist collective seems anti-howard etc etc.
Opening up the UWS newspaper (i'm assuming the only one) there was not a single article that i felt wasn't anti-liberal.

I'm excited that uni seems to be an environment where discussion of different views etc takes place, and i'm not worried about being censored for any of my views it was just intereresting.

Im sure there are a lot of uncultured rightest brats in uni. The problem is that they are too conservative and refined to really make any definitive and outspoken statements regarding the left. And why should they? The right is getting its way. Its the leftists, the political and societal minority, that are continously trampled on by big brats with shoes on that are too big to fill.

Perhaps that's true in society in general, but university i'd say is one place where the left is getting it's way.
Yet, i think the whole point of the leftest stance you see in univernsity is an attempt to forge some sort of sociological change. The two arent unrelated.

You will find that those who are bothered to enter student politics are quite clueless. People like me and others on this forum who post don't touch student politics.
Yea, i get the feeling student politics is rather pathetic, also often over-exaggerating trivial issues.

Mainly because at uni the young liberals are actually stupid and young labor often doesnt follow far behind. Both are extreme at uni. Both groups are usually just kidsthat have been brain washed by parents.
Do these people ever actually end up leading? getting into the parties? I get the feeling that for alot of them their power doesn't extend much beyond the university.

Um. Someday they could be PM. As you can see at the federal level their is a dearth of any real talent. The private sector picked up all the brains.

Like for me I just don't have time to waste getting into student politics.
lol Western australian premier Geoff Gallop,
has a BEc MA MPhil DPhil MLA....

How long was that guy in uni eh?

There's a difference between the Young Liberals and Student Liberal groups but yeah, I found that out for myself at market day.

All in all the ANU student union seems to be rather good. $200 student union fees and only a $100 fee for a yearly membership to the campus gym. I'm going to cough up even AFTER VSU :)

NB : I know the head of the SRC at Sydney last year was the brother of the NSW YLA State President.

I must say tho, i do agree with the student union... Their fee's should be mandatory. Even if i don't really like feminist societies and such I feel that there's a need for these groups, and also for the other welfare services student union offers\.

Which party was pressing for abolishing/reducing HECS fees?

Just a coincidence that so many young uni students appear to be more Labour supporters?

I think that the left doesn't totally dominate campus life however it is probably a much larger proportion at uni than in society in general.

I'm a bit to the left myself.... but the Students Association is often far, far left. I don't mind paying for the student union... it provides good services etc. I have a problem paying for the Students Association though, because even though I am left, I don't think people should be forced to financially support something which only supports one political view etc. If you believe in it, support it, but people shouldn't be forced to support a group whose agenda is so politically one sided.

I think the reason why the left is such a strong force in universities is because young people are usually a lot more idealistic than the older generation... plus they don't have mortgages etc to worry them in to voting liberal....

A friend of my dad's said to me "if you can't be radical when you are young, what hope do you have?".... I guess the extreme political views that you can find in university can be seen as a form of rebellion from Australia's youth.

And you don't need to be as vocal if you aren't being radical... hence you probably hear the left a lot more loudly at uni.

Yes it's my first year, i'm new meat.

Yea well I understand why there is so much of it at uni, it seems there are a fair few educators on the left and of course young people in general are more to the left. But yea, i dun really wanna have to pay money to support protest rallies that I don't support, to put anti-howard propaganda all over the student diary...

Hmm if it was only that much I would be willing to pay after VSU, but unfortunately at USYD I dont view the majority of "services" provided to be worth it (such as subsidised food or protests), if I could only pay towards subsidised childcare and other directly related student support services (heck even a fair bit of the union) but alas those services are a minority to what a need subsidised coke is (which is still more expensive than that in streets surrounding the campus).

Does anyone know if Manning turns over enough to keep it open after VSU?
