kinda true until you factor that these marks would probably get him first for any other non selective school

It is impossible to do a proper calculation without separating out those maths ranks.
At the 2 unit level, you would not have included the 2 unit-only students.
In fact, the ranks that appear on his/her Preliminary report would not be sufficient.
At the 2 unit level, you will have to take the report rank, and remove all the people who chose to do Ext 2.
At the Ext 1 level, you will have to remove the people who chose to drop to 2U (although I don't expect that will be too many)

There were only about 12 ppl in the 2u class though - everyone else did either 3u or dropped maths ([emoji20])
So I guess 2u would probably be around ~105-106/156, not sure
Our school has always been really iffy about giving us ranks though @_@
