This is a very common misconception.

Although you are not doing the highest scaling subjects like English Standard you can still very easily get over 90 ATAR (you pretty much have the same chances of getting over 90 even with someone that does 4u math/phys/chem/eng adv). It's important to note that the reason english standard doesn't scale as well is because NESA deems it to be easier than other subjects like English Extension 2. This theoretically means it should be easier to achieve a higher mark, and thus won't be greatly impacted by scaling.

If you achieve a high mark (which SHOULD be easier) scaling won't matter and therefore you are flawed in your interpretation that it will bring you down.

Now, the reason not that many people get a band 6 in English standard is because English is a compulsory subject and therefore low effort students aiming for a lower ATAR goal than yourself will typically pick the 'easier/standardised version' of English. This could be a potential reason as to why not that many people get b6's in english standard.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for that also would you say overall my subjects are more on the lower side of scaling, average or higher end

I'd have to agree. Biology and 3u math certainly contribute as your high scaling subjects.

Please don't feel discouraged about your subjects, you chose them for a reason and a 97+ atar can be obtained regardless of subjects.

Hey everyone, I'm at the end of year 10. I kind of fooled around in year 10 English (despise the subject) and forced to do English Standard (NSW). The subjects I'm doing are:
Math Adv
English Standard (ES)
Business Studies (BS)
Software Engineering (SE)
Chemistry
Investigating Science (IS)

I just mass copypasted a bunch of information.
1. Basically change Software engineering to economics
2. On the fence of changing business studies to biology
3. Concerned about the workload

I'm really concerned with the workload being too much to comprehend and understand. Any thoughts?
Are my current subjects good for a high atar? What about my revised changes?

I'm confident in math adv, BS and SE and to a lesser extent Chemistry. It's English that's throwing me off, particularly English Standard as it's the one subject I'm doing miserably in. I plan to do tutoring in year 11 to prevent me from failing ES and doing well in it. I've been dooming myself these past few weeks into thinking I won't get a high ATAR or HSC results, especially due to ES. I have piss poor study habits and feel like I'll somehow screw myself into failing so I desperately need to work on that too. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated :)

On an alternate note, does any extra-curricular activities help with Uni applications or do they solely only care about ATAR. I currently do nothing so I'm worried. And do extra-curricular activities help with any Early Entry Schemes? I'd like to do something in Business, Medicine or Economics or ideally law but I dont think that's happening with Eng Standard. If I don't get a high enough ATAR, what are some alternate pathways or opportunities that can help me into the degree/course I desire

I received the list of the subjects I got. I've got a friend who is considering changing SE to Economics while I want to change SE to Economics. I enjoyed Commerce and think Economics could further expand my love for business. So I'm most likely going to change SE to Economics. The more conflicted matter is changing BS to Bio. I'd like to work either in medicine, law, business/economics, or software/IT. HUGE stretch but most likely not going to happen. Otherwise I could do 2 sciences (chem, bio) and Inves, leaving BS but I'd rather keep BS. Is BS worth keeping over Bio?

Sorry for posting this late but why wouldn't someone just pick all the easy subjects then? It might scale bad but if it's something like maths standard wouldnt it make it very simple to get a high mark, I've seen people get above 99 from just low scaling subjects so I don't see the point in taking subjects like math ext 2.
