my friends aunty seems to think that her TER that she got in 1994 was better than my friends ATAR and i was wondering if anyone would know if a TER of 394 was better than an ATAR of 98.90.
i know its a long shot coz everyone here is young but ahhh well.
Did your friend's aunty do the HSC in NSW? In NSW the system changed from the mark out of 500 to the TER in the late 80s/early 90s - I don't know the exact year. Certainly by 1994 they were reporting TERs (percentile ranks between 0 and 100). Marks out of 500 were no longer issued.
The system has changed a couple of times since then. In 1994 the rank that was given was a rank of just those who applied for a TER. This means that 15% of those who wanted a TER got less than 15. In 1998 it changed from a TER to a UAI.
The ATAR is a ranking that assumes that all students who started year 7 finished year 12 and applied for an ATAR. The wording is better on the UAC site:
http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/atar/scaling-process.shtml.
394 now correlates with an ATAR in the 94-95 range. Even though ATARs are worth less than UAIs, which in turn are worth less than TERs, I don't think it would reach 98.90.
