as in "can there even be an average"

Yes.

The weights of all 17 year old girls in the world at a given time, added together and divided by the amount of 17 year old girls. Obviously this would be logistically impossible but we can use smaller samples sizes to give a pretty good indication.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(statistics)

With a reasonable sample size, selected in a scientifically valid manner (taking into consideration factors that may cause bias in the sample etc...), you can draw conclusions about the likely population level statistics.

You can never prove anything with statistical sampling, but you can test how well the data fits with expected distributions, and obtain what appears to be a valid sample, that you would expect to occur with a reasonable probability in a normal population.

Boris, she said that the restrictions on her search were rough so it HAS to be an AUS site. Second, back off or i'll tear your head off.

The doctor I went to had some chart on their computer which had the averages.
I'm 160cm tall and 55kg and I'm below average height and weight... didn't see what the exact average is, just my little red dot no where near the average line :( haha.
