Seraphim, what difference is this actually going to make, apart from changing the name? Isn't the uni just repackaging what they already offer in the hope that it's going to sound better?

I think the Faculty is serious about make material changes to the degree as they're losing out on nearly all the good students to Adv Sci at Usyd.

Yes. UNSW science is trying to further differentiate the Adv Sci from the normal Sci stuff. Carl - should you be posting that stuff?? Is is from the Faculty Board?

True, they have to do those crappy 'special' adv sci 3uoc subjects.

It was available on the Secretariat site but it's been taken down due to further revision.

Many combined degree students are doing Commerce or Engineering too and have been corrupted already so they don't count. This is being pitched at your elite maths/science students (olympaid) who are highly likely to pursue to do just a BSc.

I think the main challenge is how to offer TSP-like opportunities which:
- are challenging and non-trivial and leads to further opportunities for real research
- strikes the right balance in terms of how many ppl are on TSP

Anyways, some programs of study are only offered in the adv sci degree (e.g. neuroscience), so there's a difference.

No, the neuroscience program is only available in the advanced science stream, this is also true for usyd's neuroscience program.

Major studies: Anatomy, biochemistry, biological science (including botany and zoology), biotechnology, chemistry, ecology, genetics, geoscience*, marine and coastal studies, medical chemistry*, medical microbiology and immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience*, pharmacology, physical oceanography, physics, physics and astronomy*, physics and computing*, physiology, psychology and vision science.

* Study plans specifically designed for the advanced level and only available in the Advanced Science program.

Exceptions do apply. Have a talk with the person-in-charge of the Neuroscience Program/Courses.

Should you be performing at an overall WAM of 70 or above, B Sci students are allowed to enroll straight into B Adv Sci.

If you cannot do a major in Neuroscience, it does NOT stop you from enrolling in ANY of the Neuroscience courses, provided you meet the Pre-Requisites, i.e. PSYC courses, ANAT courses, etc. The UNSW Handbook should be much more accurate.

s-AINT, don't believe whatever UAC tells you. You are better off trusting people who have been studying at the uni for 4 years.

For example, according to UAC, geoscience* can only be majored in Adv science, that's full of crap. I'm sure you can do all GEOSXXX subjects in BSc. Go ask the Science Student Office.
