can someone please explain how the BA works? none of the numbers of units they give seem to add up.

i want to major in art history, maybe in indonesian as well ... but together i can't work out how they add up to 144units to complete the BA

Each year you complete 48 units. 24 per semester. A subject is 6 units.

An arts major is probably 42 units or something. So you can do 2 or three majors. Say you do 3, this leaves you with 18 units left. That's 3 subjects you can take simply for the heck of it. Or you can take them from your majors so you're more specialised.

Or you can complete just two majors and have 60 units or ten courses to do for the heck of it of to supplement your two majors.

Typically for admission to honours it is a requirement to do a 60 (as opposed to 42) unit major.

I could do a 60 unit major in say history, then a 42 unit major in Sociology. I would still have 42 units left so perhaps i could fit in another whole major. Is 60 units enough for honours consideration or would i be better to scrap the third major and specialise even more. Given History and Sociology are both School of Social Sciences I wouldnt mind picking a third major from a totally different area. Are there any existing Arts or Honours students that might be able to give me any advice? I will ask this question at PEA day as well

In answer to the apparent question:

60 units is enough, so you could still do a third major. I would suggest even thinking about an out of faculty major to give abit more variety.

Can you explain a little bit about doing an out of faculty major...Do you mean something not from the arts faculty. I wouldnt mind doing Psychology but it is in science at ANU. Does anyone know if it can be included in an Arts degree?

Yes it can be included.

You are bang on - an out of faculty major is any major from another faculty.

A psychology major (science faculty) is 42 units so would fit in nicely.

An economics or commerce pass major comprises just 36 units so again would easily fit (in fact you could fit an honours one as they are 42 units).

Here's a list of random majors that might interest (grouped by faculty):

Arts:
Linguistics,
Developement studies,
Geography,
International Relations/Politic Science.

Eco/Comm:
Economics.

Science:
Psychology,
Statistics,
Ecology and Evolution,
Computer Science.

Just a small sample I skimmed from the undergraduate handbook - I recommend grabbing a copy on PEA day and having a read, see what interests you.

lol After consulting your advice and whinging, whining and getting cranky at eachother (and the ANU website) for four hours, Mum and I finally worked it out. How dumb did we feel?

It was trying to work out how I could do honours and what subjects I'd do in that course, without really thinking about anything else, that stuffed us up

BTW: 6 units is a dumb number for non-mathematical people to work with. UNCLE's was 10 units, way easier

arts is tricky to work out majors, so call the faculty and ask for an appointment with the course advisor, Melinda Hinkson. though if youre only about to start ask when you enrol at melville hall, ive seen so many people unable to graduate in arts cos theyre one subject off a major cos they picked the wrong subject

I find it fairly easy - its more a pain in the arse to choose courses that are actually running in a given semester.
