Hey, I'm in my first year doing an Arts degree (at ANU obviously), I'm thinking about majoring in History and Gender, Sexuality and Culture.

I was wondering what are the academic paths I can take after my Arts degree?

I know there's honours, but what if I don't into the honours program? Is it hard to get into the honours program?

What's the difference between Honours and Masters? Do you need anything special to get into a Masters program?

What do you need to get into a PhD program?

Hope I make sense, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You generally need a credit average to get into an honours programme or continue into a Masters.

Generally (or at least in the Science faculty, it may be different in the Arts faculties), it goes like this:

Bachelor -> Masters -> PhD
or
Bachelor -> Honours (with a 1st Class result) -> PhD
or
Bachelor -> Honours (< 1st Class result) -> Masters -> PhD

It depends on how well you do/how long you wish to take.

Also, if you have a look here --> ANU - Handbook 2008 - Student Administration Services - SAS you can find the honours grade requirements for your particular majors as well as any compulsory courses you might need to do to qualify.

As for specific requirements for postgrad degrees, have a look at the ANU website in the Graduate study section and it should explain the process.
