I want to have a career in finance. Since I got a scholarship from the university, I elected to study Bachelor of Applied Finance.
However, some people tell me this degree is not as good as Bachelor of Finance in other universities. I doubt that. Some people tell me since Macquarie does not have Bachelor of Commerce- Finance, I should study Bachelor of Commerce and head my major toward Finance. I doubt this, too.
What is your opinion and advice about this ? Is there any difference between Bachelor of Applied Finance and Bachelor of Finance?

Thanks in advance:)

Actually we do have BCom-finance. It's a three year course I believe, and you won't be able to do FIN310 in third year. I think this degree is more flexible than app fin in terms of planning ur timetable but I also believe there are more ppl going for applied finance degree than just bcom finance.

I myself have added app fin to my bcom accounting single degree. I think app fin is fairly decent degree, and more intersting than accounting

And lastly, we only have two finance degrees, and they are mentioned in my post. There's no bachelor of finance at macq..

And about uni, other unis may have more finance units. But apparently some people still don't realize we are in undergrad level and we(not just Macq, but all undergrads.) are just learning the most basic and introductory stuff of whatever is out there in the real world of business. If this looks doubtful, just look up any units and see it's description. I'm pretty sure most of them will have 'fundamentals' , 'introduction to', and 'basic'. So as long as you have made to a uni, concentrate on your weekly tutes, get some work experience and make sure you'll have something other than grades to put on your resume..

As far as I can remember, B Com- Finance is just the B App Fin without FIN310. It's one unit the difference and some flexibility in 3rd year subjects [where an App Fin student will pick 2 from: ACCG329, ACCG352, ACCG353 or ACST300 and 2 from: ECON335, ECON350 or ECON360; a Com- Fin student can pick any 4 of those 7. So a B Com- Fin student could meet the prereqs for App Fin and FIN 310.] Of the two, B App Fin is the more specific degree, while B Com seems more flexible/general.

I would take B App Fin over B Com- Fin. I think you would only choose B Com- Fin if you weren't sure or wanted to have that flexibility. But if you know you want to get into finance, I can't see any reason why you would pick B Com- Fin over B App Fin.

Thanks so much for your advice, cool !!!
It could be a little bit complicated to change my degree right now. But you guys say there is only a little difference between those 2 degrees, so is there any chance that I could change my degree from BAppFin to BComFin later? Say 1st year, 2nd year?

To be honest, they are not very different other than the subject FIN310 as stated and choosing of a comp or isys unit. Other than that they are dead similar. I am doing a B Comm (majoring in finance)/B Laws and ill rather my degree than B Applied finance. Reason being is although I do almost the same subjects, if I don't intend on pursuing finance, I can just change over to another major such as economics or accounting. It is a little broad but I am sure you would be looked upon the same as a Applied Finance student applying for the same job relating to finance.

The broader choice in 3rd year and not having to meet the prereqs for FIN310 are what differentiates B Com-Fin from B AppFin.
What does this difference mean to you now in first year? Not much.

You could go through a B Com Fin without having to do ECON141 because you might not choose ACCG329 or ACCG352 (out of those 7 I mentioned before). But for App Fin, ECON141 will be a prereq for FIN310, and also for ACCG329 and ACCG352 (if you were to choose those).

So the difference at your stage is basically an ISYS 100 level unit (most people do ISYS123) and ECON141. Both units are offered all year, so it will be easy to fit them into your program. Also, ISYS isn't a prereq for another compulsory unit (just necessary for the degree), so you could even leave it till 3rd year. And ECON141 is a prereq for 3rd yr subjects, so you can do it in 2nd year if you can't fit it into 1st year.

Thanks for all the advice, great help !
I've decided to choose BAppFin
Could you give me some introduction about the system in Macquarie: how to register for subject, arrange timetable, choose teacher, lecturer, tutor
And what subjects should I choose for the 1st year, semester specifically please
Thanks lots again:)

Look up the Program of Study for B AppFin in the Handbook, and it should set out the list of compulsory subjects.

As for your class registration, have you been to your enrolment day/advice session yet?
