I think that its very judgemental to perceive somebody as "depressed" when u don't even know them, or have made little effort to get to know them better. As for self pity, i think ur deluding urself if u really believe that he pities himself, or in fact cares whether others pity him...

Gemita, you aren't a very smart person if you brand somebody with serious problems who needs to tallk to people to help deal with a sudden resurgence of the problems. You need to understand somebody before you can. Depression and Manic Depression are serious problems, you can't just stop yourself from being depressed with a flick of a switch. Depression makes you self pitying.
What? When did I ever mention anything about manic depression? Or even depression at all?

I'll quite freely admit that I didn't really have any baggage at all... but the last few months has lead me to have enough baggage, you could confuse me for the mascot international terminal.

those who are depressed dont necessarily pity themselves....theyre usually past that. its the self pitying which leads to depression.

u should keep this in the other thread, but i will say depression is a very broad term and occurs over a range of problems- self pity can definately be one as can lots of things

Um, no. If you think that depression is a form of "over the top, self-pitying baggage" then you are the one who is "not very smart" as you so tactfully put it. Depression is a serious medical condition, and I was definitely not referring to it in my post. Notice the distinct lack of the word "depression"? That's because I wasn't talking about it. Please don't attack me for things I haven't said.

Sleft-pitying baggage is normally a precursor, or part of depression. Believe me i know. You might not of known that, so im not going to fight. just being informative.

a fine line. Some people have baggage that is just there and they deal with it, others have really bad baggage and turn to self pity. there are probably more forms though.

It seems that everyone has an opinion on emotional baggage but no one really defines it... So self pity would be like 'I'm so ugly and I want to curl up and the world to go away...'? and 'normal' emotional baggage would be just having hang ups over a past relationship?

Is that sorta close to being right?

Yeah, I kinda see it that way. Normal baggage is just when you've been through some bad times in the past, and while they affect your beliefs they're sort of dealt with. I look at self-pitying baggage as not real baggage, but fishing for compliments. Like, "Oh I'm so fat and ugly" read: tell me I'm beautiful!
