I was wondering what determines how much % of the cohort achieve a band 6 in a certain subject. Do you need to come in the top 10% of a subject for example, or simply meet the mark required to get a band 6 ? I noticed that some subjects have a quite higher percentage compared to others, is this because the cohort usually has more academically gifted students or something along those lines ?

If by cohort you mean the entire year 12 throughout the state, it changes every year. the markers use the process of aligning to ensure that a band 6 from one year is equal to a band 6 in another year, so it's not a percentage but a standard - basically it varies from year to year.
in terms of subjects, yeah it depends on how talented the cohort is as well. they've established the standard for a b6, and so its just how ever many people meet that standard
