i do seng/commerce and i can explain why we get a major and minor whereas the other eng/comms get a single major.
coz in a normal seng program, you're forced to do all these infs subjects anyway, which belong to commerce faculty. so now that u're doing seng/commerce, they might aswell reward you for doing those subjects, hence you get a minor in info sys.
Your misinforming the people d00d. I will clarify your slightly mis-guided post.
Eng/Com is 5.5years
Eng(Software)/Com is 5years
As another person has posted this earlier, in the handbook, this quote concerns the Eng/Com 5.5yr combination
at least 96 units of credit comprising a major of at least 48 units of credit in an approved disciplinary stream and a minor of 24 units of credit of approved session courses of which no more than 12 units may be level 1 courses; prescribed level 1 introductory courses; or suitable electives to make up the full 96 UOC;
Now if you read that properly, basically
* You can do a minor in the general Eng/Com
OR you can just fill up the remaining credit points with Commerce electives
That quoted text above, doesn't say you only have a major. It says you can choose to either have a major
OR have a major/minor as long as you do what is outlined.
The reason the handbook lists a award for major and not major/minor is because not all people will do a minor in the Eng/Com degree. By listing one thing there, it serves not to confuse others. (I guess it unintenionally did the reverse
)
So summing up, you can do a major/minor in the 5.5yr Eng/Com degree. Just follow the rules outlined (a minor being 24uoc of approved courses in some commerce specialisation)
Also, with reference to Eng(Software)/Com, its 5 years, due to the shared interest of infs courses between the Software and Commerce degree. However the courses of infs you do in Software only amount to 15uoc. So you have to use 9uoc of your software electives to fulfill the award for the minor in infs. This is the reason why seng/com aren't stuck for at uni for an additional semester.
So d00d, remember when your doing your seng/com degree, that the infs numbers must be >=24uoc or you might find yourself stuck at uni for a tad longer than expected.
Cheers
