Hi! For one of my creative piece, I want to talk about a homeless man that doesn't 'belong' in society. I.e- the setting is at a train station and he compares himself to the people who work and has a family who supports them etc. Is anyone able to give me any ideas as to how I should approach this? Or should I scrap this topic and think of another one? Thanks :)

I recommend making this subtle, perhaps, make him slowly go insane through the writing or something like that.

Subtlety is key. If its some generic story about someone not belonging or belonging you get killed when it comes to marks.
Subtle story lines and advanced structures and techniques get you the marks.

Quality writing gets you the marks, not subtlety alone. Yes, it's important to try and be more subtle (we hate cliche story lines!), but it still needs to be clear that it's a belonging story. So first, ask yourself the following questions: What message do I want to convey about belonging? How will my characterisation convey this? What symbolism would be effective? (e.g. colour as a motif to symbolise depression or isolation, or weather to show inner turmoil or a shift in a character's circumstances or perceptions) Will I have other characters interact with my main character? If so, how will I demonstrate my understanding of belonging through this interaction? (here is where the subtlety comes in).

You can also ask your teacher to look at drafts and give advice, or find an editor or a tutor to help you develop your ideas and improve your work.

2014 is the last year.

Theres no set cycle. Change lasted 3 years, Journeys 5 years, Belonging at least 6.
