hi so i realise that i may be a bit cooked and am NOT getting that reduced atar for law at usyd anyways and am thinking about doing b.arts to transfer in. i looked at the units they offered and generally speaking i love to write and talk about humanities (cough politics), its just the stigma around it is making me hesitant to even go through with it?? was thinking of changing my pref to b.ecom but i hate eco, so i'm a bit torn? like is it worth the degree fees, is it a waste of time, etc etc. can't find a lot of people talking about their experiences in b.arts online (unless im not looking hard enough) unless its to dog on the degree TT

generally just a very mixed bag of opinions on b.arts but im seeing more negatives for it?? does anyone have experience in doing law through b.arts? any advice, tips or just general knowledge that would come in handy? js really scared to find out that b.arts is not worth it and realise that i've wasted time and money hrgrghr.... ty

If you don't mind me asking, what's your projected ATAR because i know my tutor got a 95 or 96 and so he failed to get into law directly. In the end he chose b. arts (also at USYD) to try and transfer in but he said he regretted it and would have rather chosen another degree to transfer from even though he was doing quite well in the course.

Also, personally i think b.arts isn't that great of an idea but if you're going to continue it as your double if you do get into law and you're CERTAIN you can write those essays well, then maybe it could be good for you.

errr with the raws i put into the atar calc it could be anywhere around 80-85 depending on my ext 1 marks (maths ext 1 failer real (except im not jesting im deadass failing)), even with mysyd im not making the cut LOL, maths screwed me over so bad its not even funny.

could you expand on your reasoning behind why you don't think b.arts isnt a great idea and what your tutor regretted abt it? im certain about my passion about the units offered in b.arts, but i might reconsider if the negatives outweigh the positives😭😭😭

uh so
B.arts
I KNOW a lot of people say oh it's not that useless of a course and it's only the bad stigma around it and the low atar req but i do honestly think it's not that useful of a degree for the future. Ofc there have been people who are able to transfer and only after their first year but i do believe you should look at another degree.

My tutor told me that he thought it was a hard to use degree in terms of what he wanted to do in the future, like the kinda job he wanted.

Do you have any idea of what you want to do after uni?

Possibly commerce since it's easier to use compared to eco and arts. However commerce is a super popular course, alot of people are accepted every year so possibly not that competitive of a degree at the same time.

Obviously I'm not too sure but from what i've been told by someone who did the degree and masters asw in commerce (so ofc it's a while ago). She didn't have much background knowledge in the subject and her math wasn't that great but in the end she completed it with high grades throughout the course so I think as long as you have the capacity to study and work a little harder, commerce should be alr for you to take. (but then again i don't know a lot about you)

tysm for your words, i'll def be considering commerce-- i'll probs look into the course and have a mini run down on the topics taught to see whether or not i have any interest first to help motivate myself a little

like i meant just in case u didnt get the wam required. idk how much u need for law tho

Even if you obtain the desired WAM to transfer to the course it's not that simple. There will be a waiting list of students just like you looking to transfer into that course aswell, depending on the WAM and course you'd currently be doing it will determine how high you are on that waiting list. And then to be transferred into the law course that depends how many spots are open for transfers, and these spots typically only open up if someone drops out form the law course.

Have you considered applying for UTS Early entry program? If successful they offer a reduced ATAR of 80 from 96 for their law program.

keep in mind a Bachelor of Arts alone isn’t a problem, uni is mostly about what major(s) you pick (this is what decides almost all of your units). I would recommend looking through the usyd major list to get a bit of an idea of which ones you might do, and then from there your degree doesn’t matter too much it just has to match one (not necessarily both) of your majors - you can literally do a b arts in economics and finance if you want

i think the main thing with finding an intermediary course for transferring into law is to choose something you’d be okay with sticking with if things don’t work out

I'm gonna do a B.Arts but I'm not gonna transfer, I'm just gonna do law after lol😭 I don't really care about the stigma and I'm actually really interested in the majors I'm gonna do, so hopefully it'll give me some prior knowledge before I go to law school. Ngl I don't want to go to law school straight out of high school 😅

But yes you can always transfer if your WAM is high enough, don't worry too much I'm sure you'll be fine!
