Hi

I was wondering, what would be the best/most advantageous majors/subjects to study in the Bsc degree at Usyd if i was wanting to transfer to Medicine/Dentistry and maybe physio in the future? I was thinking maybe cell pathology, immunology, anatomy and histology etc....

Thanks heaps for your help!

(basically, what do first year Med, Dentistry course study), therefore i can get an advantage if i get in

whatever interest you the most, and u will get the higest marks to transfer.

dont worry about transfer credits coz when you transfer you may get credits here and there, but it will still take you the full 5 years to complete dent course anyway

I would encourage you to take anatomy, physiology and pathology. I say these three because these areas require a lot of memorisation so it may be easier to remember the different structures/functions the second time around - the downside is you may easily forget them after a few months and you have to re-learn them in Med so it's not that much of an advantage. For example, I completely forgotten all the stuff I've learned in Histology so if I do histology again I would have to learn everything again because there is so much content.

Any specialisation within medical sciences would give you a distinct advantage when you get into medicine.

Doesn't matter whether it is BMedSc or just BSc, I encourage you to choose any subjects related to anatomy, physiology and pathology. You can do all of these subjects in BSc.

At UNSW Medicine, they learn basic anatomy, physiology, pathology, histology, microbiology (basically a bit of everything) in Year 1/2. Unlike other degrees, UNSW medicine is split into 3 phases (2 years per phase), Phase 1 consists of Year 1 and 2 students and they pretty much learn the basic sciences and a bit of clinical stuff.

If you want to have a shot at transfer, pick the subjects that you think you can enjoy and do well in.
But if you are actually after Graduate-entry program, well-balanced program that encompasses as many of the basic medical science disciplines as possible: I personally think anatomy/physiology, immunology/pathology, pharmacology, biochemistry/molecular biochemistry are the best picks. And while some of my friends would disagree, I think going for B.Sc (within advanced stream if possible) is better than B.MedSc in USYD, purely because you have to compete for HD, D, etc. (awarded to only certain prescribed percentage of students) with more motivated and generally more talented cohort in Med.Sc. than in B.Sc, making life somewhat harder for you.
