a dispute as to which is actually the director's cut version.

there are two versions.

1945 version
1946 version.

one is the director's cut. other is theatrical.

one has a scene with marlow and vivien in a lavish restaurant

the other does NOT have this scene and in fact has an additional scene with marlow going to the DA's office after figuring out it was carl who murdered geiger, and at the DA's office there's a sum up of all the facts so far. [according to some sources THIS is the director's cut...]

which is the director's cut?
which did you study?

DOES it make a huge difference if we've watched the wrong one?

Director's cut is the original 1945 version with the scene in the DA's office, without the scene of Marlowe and Vivian in the resturant. The movie was altered into the 1946 version to put in more scenes between Marlowe and Vivian, to capitalise upon Bogart/Bacalls's romance/relationship off-screen.
