Just wondering if the Mechanical (Biomedical) Degree @ USYD gives you the opportunity as working as not only a biomed engineer but also as a mechanical for eg like the space stream allows you to work in both mechanical space and regular mechanical fields.

AFAIK the biomed engineering degree at USyd strips out some mechanical subjects and replaces them with biomed specialisations. Check out the handbook for more details:

http://www.usyd.edu.au/handbooks/engineering/03_bespec_a_AeroMechMechatron.shtml

As far as the opportunity to work as a mechanical engineer as opposed to biomed engineer, that will depend on alot of other factors, such as the position you're applying for, what work you've done at uni (not just uni courses, but also extra-curricular projects e.g. Formula SAE car) and how well you can sell yourself. However, you may find that a fair proportion of employers are more interested in what skills you can demonstrate, as opposed to what's written on your degree.
