Polymer: Polylacticacid (PLA)

Monomer: Lactic acid

Bacteria used: Alcaligenes eutrophus

Process: The bacteria can be fed starch, and the lactic acid monomers are produced by the bacterial digestion of starch waste. The lactic acid can then be converted to the PLA polymer by solvent-free polymerisation.

Properties: Strong, flexible and biodegradable

Potential uses: Disposable (biodegradable) plastics, medical implants, agricultural mulch films

Research: This biopolymer was first developed in the 1980s. In 1997 in Japan a PLA/polyester copolymer film was developed. Current areas of research are into better bacteria and making the process more economically viable through catalysts.

The textbook by Irwin Farrelly, Garnett and someone has a reasonable amount on polylactic acid.
