i dwnloaded what i believed to be a video file that was originally zipped. upon unzipping it it was an application. I haven't got a virus scanner and can't check whether its spyware and whatnot. has anyone experienced this before?

Try searching the filename in google - if it is a known virus then you'll probably get a stack of results, or someone else might be/have been in the same situation.

Get a virus scanner. I recommend AVG, and its even free.

I took a gamble and opened it. It's actually a winrar archive extractor.
