children of bodom is usually called power metal with black metal singing.

Cradle Of Filth originally played black metal, but don't anymore (of their own admission)

CoF never were black metal, they just wear the corpse paint.

I personally don't consider Vampire or Extreme or Symphonic (how the hell does this word relate to black metal?) real genres.

But whatever.

Nope, same really. A lot of them just sound like made up shit by bands trying to be different and stand out, but oh well, if it works for them then I guess they can go for it.

Symphonic black metal however, I'd call a fairly established genre. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:11957 has a bit of a writeup about it, and http://www.metal-archives.com/browseG.php?g=orchestral has a list of symphonic/orchestral metal bands. A lot of them tend to just get called black/death/whatever though, so the distinction mustn't be too big a deal. Again, maybe it's just bands trying to stand out from all the others, who knows.

just paste whatever metal-archives says about them - they are the leading authority on metal on the net.

CoB are classified as "Gothenberg Metal" or Melodic Death metal. Black metal vocals are usually raw and grim, think Darkthrone or other predecessors of BM. Dimmu Borgir, post-Prometheus Emperor and the like, are not.

However, my thoughts on this topic should be kept taboo.

CoB don't sound really like melodic death to me... and yes i am aware of what proper BM vocals are like. Personally I hate melodic death for the first part, it just dosen't agree with me.

They are catergorised on Metal Archives as "Power/Speed Metal with harsh vocals"

Could you give me a proper definition of 'raw and grym' please?
