Iemma doesn't like the media much, he is really going to have to get out there and get himself a public profile to get any kind of support.

Maybe we should take it as a sign that he hasn't made any big screw ups lately and that is why we don't know his name....
That's not very comforting! =/

Stateline did an exellent job covering both Cully and Iemma. I think one thing in particular was evident when observing the two-

Scully was a much more confident orator. Iemma, although not bad a bad orator, did not exihibit the same charisma as Scully nor did he speak as fluently. Scully was magnificent as he conceded defeat and had that real 'Labor man' aura about him.

An a different note, I hope the Italian community will be voting for Iemma out of ideological similarites before a shared background...

I'm more of a federal man than one of the state, so the following may not be as 'accurate' as I would normally prefer

I normally don't swear on this forum (if at all), but this entire process stinks more than the rancid shit from the fly-blown arse of a rabid dog. That a single faction and its warloards can single-handedly determine who it is that will be Premier and that they also able to then initiate what is essentially a purge of the 'old' is quite disgusting. Sure, a number of ministers may carry quite a bit of baggage, but to just force an unknown down the throats of the public? Sure, some ministers may be under-performing, but to threaten three senior ministers that actually seem to be getting somewhere with their portfolios merely because they are part of the 'old guard'? As for 'generational' change, the only change that is required is one that removes the touch of the factional powerbrokers for good. That's unlikely, though.

I'm hardly a fan of the Liberals, but at the current time I cannot help but think that the Brogden and O'Farrell partnership (be one leading or the other) may be the better option for the state.

Yeah, but what can we do? It looks more like the Galactic Empire each day. I can't help but feel that Iemma is just a front for all the campaigns being set up by the Labor Right and if anything bad should happen they'll just blame him. It's like Iemma wont have much of a say or will be easy to pushover with policy.

From today's smh

Might not be as unexpected as we thought.

Bob Carr's sudden retirement might have had the major media outlets in shock, but it was older news than the meat raffle at South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club. Locals are wondering what all the fuss was about, given an accurate prediction of his retirement had apparently been common knowledge for months.

The Bondi View, a community newspaper, carried the worldwide scoop in its May edition: "Rumours are circulating in Maroubra that the NSW Premier, Bob Carr, will announce his retirement in July 2005 ... The rumour is circulating through the South Maroubra Surf Club."

At the time, Carr was busy telling anyone who asked that he would stick around to contest the 2007 election, "God willing".

The Premier's aides can't account for the View's tale. "He definitely made his decision over the weekend. As regards to what a community newspaper would like to publish, I can't speculate," a Carr spokeswoman said.

Carr, the MP for Maroubra, grew up in nearby Matraville and has plenty of friends in the area.

NSW Treasurer Andrew Refshauge will announce his resignation as deputy premier and as a member of parliament at 9:45 today.

Dr Refshauge, who served as Carr's deputy for 17 years, ten as deputy premier and seven in opposition decided to go after realising that the political landscape had changed dramatically.

Morris Iemma, the former Health Minister will be elected Premier later today and it is likely that John Watkins, the Transport Minister, will become the deputy.

Mr Iemma has previously declined to rule out dumping Dr Refshauge from the treasury portfolio.

Deputy Premier quits

August 02, 2005

NEW South Wales Treasurer and Deputy Premier Andrew Refshauge has announced he is to quit Parliament next week.

Dr Refshauge's resignation follows the retirement of NSW Premier Bob Carr, who tomorrow will be succeeded by new Labor premier Morris Iemma.

Dr Refshauge said it was time to move on.

"You might ask why didn't I make this decision earlier," he said.

"I think it is fair enough to say that when Bob decided that he would leave I responded as I suppose any medical practitioner would, I took an analytical approach to it."

Dr Refshauge, who also held the state development and Aboriginal affairs portfolios, was Bob Carr's loyal deputy for 17 years.

He was appointed Treasurer in January after the retirement of Michael Egan.

Before entering Parliament as the member for Marrickville in 1983, Dr Refshauge, 56, worked as a doctor in Aboriginal health and co-founded the Doctors Reform Society.

Dr Refshauge, a member of Labor's Left faction, said he thought it was the right time to leave Parliament.

"Since (Carr's resignation), I have been able to see what my feelings are, my thoughts and you might have noticed it was a very sunny weekend as well," he said.

"I think the time is right," he said.

"Bob and I got in (to Parliament) on the same day. Maybe our replacement should come in on the same day too."

Dr Refshauge said he made the decision last night, and contacted incoming premier Morris Iemma about his decision.

"I've decided that the time is right to move on to other things," Dr Refshauge said.

"What they will be, I don't know.

"But the time is right, I have decided it's right to leave."

He wished Mr Iemma the best of luck.

Mr Iemma will be formally elected premier by the Labor caucus this morning.

The Labor caucus is expected to elect a new deputy premier next week.

Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt and Transport Minister John Watkins are considered the front runners for the position.

Ms Tebbutt, a member of the upper house, is also a possible replacement for Dr Refshauge in the Sydney seat of Marrickville.

Dr Refshauge said Mr Iemma had offered to allow him to continue as treasurer, but he had decided to retire from politics.

"He implied very clearly that he would be wanting me to stay as treasurer," Dr Refshauge said.
I was listening to the speech on 702 earlier today, and the sunny weekend comment managed to get a bit of a laugh from those covering the event.

Edit: I do realise that this article has already been posted, but I can see little point in creating a new thread and continuing on with it in order to discuss an issue that it is already being debated (in both this thread and tully's Iemma thread).

Indeed 3 threads are not needed. 2 at the most.

Anyway, Its sad to see Refshauge go, He was one of NSW Labor's best imho.

Iemma, i dont feel will live up to the challenge the job presents. HE needs to control the media and not let the media control him and his agenda. So far he has failed miserablly at this.

Rumors are circulating that Craig Knowles will resign from politics tommorow.

Apparently he took the view that he was not wanted in the new cabinet.

They are dropping like flies now!

it wasn't unexpected to us either... Milton (our local state guy) told us months ago that it was fairly unlikely that Carr would stay on for the rest of the year....

For the sake of tying up the loose end...

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/labor-clearout-now-knowles-quits/2005/08/03/1122748671114.html

New NSW Premier Morris Iemma has lost his second minister in as many days.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Craig Knowles today announced he was quitting politics.

"In discussions last Monday evening, Morris and I talked about the shape of his new Government," Mr Knowles said at a press conference this morning.

Despite the "very generous offer of a senior portfolio in his new Government", Mr Knowles decided to quit.

"I advised Morris yesterday of my decision to retire from public life," Mr Knowles said.

"Effective next Wednesday, I will resign both as minister and as member for Macquarie Fields."

He said he was resigning with "a happy heart".

My dad's not too happy with Costa's appointment. He works in the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources. (which is now split up between 3 different ministers!)

Under the 10 years of Carr he saw his division in the department shrink from 70 public servants, to a mere team of 4 now.

No. Beamer was demoted (she lost the Planning Administration portfolio), and Tripodi was promoted (he was given/awarded the Roads portfolio).
