Boys vs. Girls in the HSC (1 Viewer)

According to a newspaper article that I had recently read, girls generally outperform boys in English while boys generally outperform girls by almost double in Mathematics.

This probably explains why in general girls outperform boys in the HSC/UAI. Since English is a compulsory subject and Mathematics is not, many female students have the advantage of gaining better marks than many male students, since many male students generally do not perform as well as the female students in English, so they tend to have a lower UAI.

This may seem like a sexist generalisation but statistics do prove this.

Anybody want to comment on this?

There aren't as many girls doing maths and science subjects. I've definitely noticed that. I've also noticed that there are more girls in english classes.

But it's odd that males generally have a lower UAI than females because they're crap in English. English doesn't scale that well compared to maths. Maybe only because English is compulsory. But I reckon maths should be compulsory as well.

Yeah, scientifcally it had something to do with the different regions males and females use in the brain... heard that from some documentary....

And that the english syllabus is generally in favour of the girls... forgot why...

Maybe the englsih syllabus is in favour of girls because you have texts like Emma and Clueless. They're more femaley (sorry, I'm making up my own words)

A l - just out of curiosity, where are you getting your stats from?

The new HSC English syllabus was meant to rectify the issue of girls outperforming boys in English. Whether that's been proved true or not, I'm not sure, although there was a SMH article last year that believed boys were catching up with girls in the English domain. But it was something about boys enjoying the set texts more rather than a comparison of statistics.

Similarly, science courses were changed to be more accomodating towards girls - thus claims that Chem has become the neo-English.

at my school boys usually get the higher uais when above 99. but about 50% of girls get over 90 while for guys its about 30% or somewhere around that. but guys do better at the sciences and maths (althouh girls got 1st and 2nd in 4u math this year), and girls do better at humanities generally as well as geography (top 3 were girls, then me yay)

it's because maths and science have been traditionally male subjects
acutally I think last year girls topped chem, bio and phys (see my essay in the legal forum) I forget if a girl topped maths though

Are you talking about girls on average or the 1st in the subject?
A girl topped 3 unit if I remember correctly.
Keypad topped 4 unit
and a male at James Ruse topped Physics and Chemistry.

Physics and chemistry have turned into ROTE learning subjects more. Not really that advantageous to one sex or the other, the calculations more then compensated for in the humanities style questions.

No you can not produce breedable offspring with just females, that are a combination of two parrents, at least not yet.

i came across this issue when doing my PIP for society and culture. and even if there is statistics to back it up, i dont think its necessarily true, esp not at my school. i think the top 3 in 4u maths were girls, and the class was about half half, with most of the girls doing really well. i was one of the sucky girls, but meh i dont care. and in my english class, it was the boys who dominated. except for the accelerants grr lol
and as for science courses being modified to suit girls better, thats crap. i hate the new hsc courses so much grr stupid essays in physics

species have the same number and type of chromosomes and are able to interbreed to produce fertile offspring......i know wat species is mr......

There was an article in The Age this morning outlining the performance of students in the VCE this year because people received their UAI/TER/ENTERs today as well as study scores in this state. High Achievers will be listed on Wednesday and School Performance on Thursday.

hmm...i would have thought, that if the statistics are true, then the guys would get the higher UAI's since all maths courses scale higher than their respective english courses. [ie. ext 2 maths compared to ext 2 eng, etc]. but then, i guess it depends on how much better they do, not only in these two subjects, but others as well. you can't conclude exclusively that girls do better than guys because girls are better at english in the HSC. it's a combination of all factors.

and maybe just because girls use their brains much more efficiently...*wink wink*

well, i actually didn't do the HSC, since i live in brissie so i can't really say much about the HSC and how its scaled, not a single clue. But as someone posted earlier (from looking at past OP (or UAI) spreads) generally there are more males with OP 1 (the highest) with females just behind....but the general 'high achievers' eg...OP1 ~ 5 females dominate, and males have more lower OPs...if that makes any sense :|

nothings wrong with you. of course there will always be exceptions. me, i am so crap at english, but i blame it on being forced to do work on stuff that is so boring. i'm definitely better at maths and science than at english

Just a quick comment about girls performing better in English - in our class of 18 (advanced) we outnumber the girls 10 to 8 - and also those who ranked top 5 in the class were all my friends and I who are guys. I know this obviously doesn't speak for the whole state, but just thought I'd throw it in

Oh, and I remember this one time where our teacher did tell us about statistics that showed girls did better in English generally - and the girls in our class basically laughed because they knew we were kicking their asses
