Overview: a fairytale mode of writing to portray an allegorical story of the Holocaust. Text shows contradictory but also parallel worlds. As Gemma admits to Becca prior to her death, 'I am Briar Rose.' We learn that her early life was marked by acts of courage, resilience, endurance and determination against forces so bestial and evil that they almost defy comprehension. Real story is one about victims and survivors. Becca's story is one of inheritance and acknowledgement. Negative connotations associated with the horrible experience within the backdrops. Features of exploration, investigation and revelation augment layers of folklore. The sinister shadows of the past that affected not only Gemma but also all European Jews are not brought easily to light. Becca goes on a mission of discovery to find out the truths about Gemma and the 'inheritance' her ancestry bequeaths her. Connections between the 'great mist', 'curse', 'briary thorns', 'castle' and 'kiss' of the story of Briar rose story and the events of World War 2. Irony, satire, comedy and juxtaposition are used to link these two worlds. Many features of the heroic quest type story. There is the damsel in distress, the young, courageous hero who after many encounters with evil opponents proves victorious and rescues her. Classic fairy tale of sleeping beauty into a nightmarish vision of the holocaust. Gemma transformed the ugly truths about Nazi persecution that she suffered into a parable and mythical cautionary tale. As in all fairy stories, to take some moral lessons form this that may help explain the world and the forces of evil that are prevalent within it.
