haha i so didnt think this thread would turn out the way it did.
nonetheless, discussing the "need" for 99+ we must remember two things:

1. a person IS still capable of getting 99+ with a social life. if you are not a naturally "bright" person, even without a social life and contunous study, you unfortunately have a VERY slim chance of getting that mark

2. statistically, the people who do best in the hsc, i.e. 99+ are said to have had a lovely balance in their lives

so keep that in mind when u decide u want to put ur life on hold for the HSC

Now we're into the territory of what qualifies as necessity.
That's true, but (and I'm not qualifying you here), I think a lot people hold the notion that that really do NEED to get a 99 (or a 90 or whatever), with there being no alternative (or an exceptionally bad one). Not a good way to think at all.

I suppose the notion of needing to get 99 is just a method of trying to motivate people to try their best or fail miserably. The HSC wouldn't be so bad if people didn't kill themselves over it.
You mean if you don't work hard, it's your own fault if you screw up? That may be part of it, but some people think that if they don't get the mark they want for their course, they are doomed. You are doomed if you look at life like that. Always look at other possibilities.

Almost all the guys who've gone 99+ have had no social lives...I intend to follow in their hermitages.

P.S - None of them were asian.
