A credit average probably wouldn't get you into Melb's JD would it? I think you'd need Honours with that to be considered.

Maybe go back to Monash's LLB or do the LEC if it's offered in Melbourne.
I know you got to work for it if you want it, but another 5 years study doing a law degree forget that.

A prestigous or boutique I think is the way to go.

And the previous posters comments about audit being no good for IB's and tax being better I am sure you are way off with this. I am certain they like people with audit experience. I am pretty sure i have seen quite a few jobs advertised where they claim those iwth audit experience should apply as it is valued.

And I remember an HR lady at an accounting firm tell me audit is a good place to start to move into corporate finance.

Also do you guys know if 6 months experience is enough to move from a top 30 firm into one of the big 4, or even top 10, prefereably into there corporate finance area, or is this unachievable? maybe a year or 2 more is needed?

Finally I may have to go work overseas after a year because my girlfriend is from europe and will probably head back with her if I am still with her after that time. Do you think after a year, year and a half experience it would be possible to get a job in an IB or big 4 in europe? UK luxembourg, belgium, any of these,

Thanks

Re: BRW Top 100 accounting firms

wtf, how can bell partners have 8 million in fees per partner and the rest average 1.8mil or so

those partners are raking it in.

stop whining, a mid-tier isn't all bad. You get more diverse experience and you'll get promoted faster than in a big 4.

that's what i've heard anyway. tho the big 4 has more company bar-tabs and more ppl to get pissed with which is a plus.

ps. it isn't hall chadwick is it? if it is then get out now.

Theres only one partner? :p

Yes its true mid-tier promote faster, but its important to not get carried away and remember that the ranks in mid-tier dont exactly correspond to the ranks in big4.

True, but I definately want to move into another area, and not accounting, luckily ca's are in demand for lots of finance jobs. So i guess ill have to go that tact. Problem is they all want you to have had big4 experience I reckon.

And yes bell only has 1 partner, so with fees like that hes either boning his senior managers and raking it in for himself, or giving them nice salaries. And yes I do think the term partner is not really warranted here.

Currently if you can pay you're in. This is changing soon of course. Anyway you don't need to go to Melb, in Victoria there is Melb, Monash, RMIT all offering JD. I think Deakin and Latrobe do too (not sure though)

um...its 2 years for a JD...3 for JD and MBA. Where the hell did you get 5 years from? Thats like a super course even grad med isn't that long.

The head of Macquarie's IBG and the CEO of Babcock&Brown are ex-Big 4 Tax Managers. Both are fairly high up with 9 figure fortunes according to the last BRW Executive rich survey.

And I remember an HR lady at an accounting firm tell me audit is a good place to start to move into corporate finance.
Of course, I'm not saying Audit is shit to move into IB, I just think there are better ones like Transaction Services and Corporate Finance.

yeah yeah, and alan moss did Arts/law, lets all do arts! there's a wide variety of sucessfull ppl to grab and say "look: do what he did!"

therefore, you need to look at things overall, and overall tax is a very narrow specialised area. audit is still pretty specialised but at least your out there with lots of differant businesses looking at auditing from a range of perspectives.

well you're practically already there, its just inside an accounting firm.

Not that simple, he majored in Economics for his Arts degree. Also he did a MBA at Harvard. Also, Australia loves having law grads in Investment Banking roles (though I don't think Moss ever was a senior Investment Banker per se- I recall he made his name in Macquarie's Risk management division)

Well lads, i found a pretty cool job that i think id like. Its with a huge international company, but they have a small but growing presence here in aus.

Anyway, the job involves valuing projects, modelling etc.

Evem thopugh the add does not say who the company is, I am pretty sure I have worked out who it is. So do you think I should go over this guys head and call them?

I would say no, because you cant be certain that it was them, and even if it is them they are using the screening process for a reason

If they're understaffed and having a busy audit season then they should either pay you more, or increase their fees then pay you more.

Don't EVER feel sorry for them.

surely that law grad thing is a myth. you can't honsetly be saying that if i did comm/law at UWS i'd have a better chance than if i do commerce at UNSW/Usyd

I wish it was but society seems to overrate the importance, intelligence or usefulness of a law graduate
