Burnt out PSU (1 Viewer)

yO,

My computer was running fine when it suddenly turned off and nothing would come on when i tried turning it back on. Upon opening my PC up i could smell this burning plastic like smell coming from the PSU, so i guess that it had burnt out; the mobo and all seems fine, and i'm quite sure that the smell was from the power supply.

tl;dr? PSU prob burnt out, questions.

1) Would there be any chance that any of my other hardware is damaged?

2) If so, how would i know what are damaged. I don't want to go buy a PSU and end up having it burn out again.

2) How much do PSUs cost? From the cheapest to top of the line stuff.

Edit: Read that if my comp doesn't beep when i turn it on, there's a prob with my motherboard, not just the PSU.

Yes definitely, most likely your mobo if anything is damaged.

Take it to your local comp store, and let them test it. Or get a test kit from DSE.

How longs a piece of string?
anywhere from $30 to $600.


Note: how long till your PSU burnt out? Did you just build your comp? Also may want to list your comp specs, so we can tell if you may have needed more power initially.

I was running about 276W (Based on a PSUcalculator) on a 250W PSU, that's probably what the problem was, oh and a fuckload of dust.

But i got a nice Antec 400W, seems like the PSU was the only problem.

my PSU burnt out too at some point, although my MB survived. I think there was a short- circuit within because the computer wasn't switched on at the time.

So it always pays to switch the computer off at the mains when you're done with it.

Dust can really fuck up your computer!

Open the side, and shove a vacuum cleaner in there
