Buying A Computer Through HECS?

Possible? Or was a person I was talking to bullshiting?

Apparently you can buy a computer and claim it on HECS so you pay for it later on.

True?

Cheers for any serious responses.

I just asked someone else and they think it might be true, i mean I can see why it is since you are paying it back, but then again its 50/50 if i had to guess

Uh, you might be able to claim a tax deduction on the computer depending on the circumstances, but you can't choose what HECS covers - it is for your tuition fees only.

I know someone who put $10,000 on their HECS for an exchange trip to Canada. This covered just about everything.

That is OS-HELP, separate thing entirely from HECS-HELP. You get two OS-HELP loans per life time and you must use them before the final year of your degree (which effectively makes it undergrad only as well). You only get that loan for purposes of exchange, nothing else.
