Buying new computer/part (1 Viewer)

Hello,

It's bin a while since I was in 'the loop' of keeping up to date with computers and tehcnology and what not. So can anyone tell me if this is there any chance of getting the following compoentns for a new pc under 1000 dolars.

Core2 Duo E6600
1GB ddr533
Geforce 7900 gt 512mb
OPTIONAL - 80-100gb hard drive
a cheap but good dvd burner
a cheap but good case
and a power supply

also i don't really understand core2 duo speeds? what are they in comparison to gigahertz? also what powersupply wil i need? would 600w/500w be enough?

Cheapest E6600s are going for ~$450.
7900GTs for about $350.
1GB DDR2-533 around $180 for a decent set.

That wraps up to be $1000ish already, so short answer is no.

Current Core 2 Duo models (Conroe/Allendale):
E6300 - 1.83GHz
E6400 - 2.13GHz
E6600 - 2.4GHz
E6700 - 2.67GHz
X6800 - 2.93GHz.

500W should be enough, although if you're getting this for gaming I'd get 2GB of RAM and wait for the new DX10 cards.

your comp will cost more than 1000$ i assure you and get ddr2 ram if your getting a Intel core 2 Duo. It's a watse of ur graphics card if u have crappy RAM. Or better yet, just wait till geforce 8 series comes outt then the prices go down.

It's more to do with the fact that practically all Core 2 mobos are DDR2 exclusive and that DDR2 RAM works better with Core 2 chipsets FSBs. Graphics cards doesn't have much to do with whether or not he uses DDR1-533 or DDR2-533.

Ops DDR2 ram. I read you guys' posts and realised that those components fro sub 1000 is almost impossible so i must compromisse. what do you think of these?

I found these mad components at MSY

- E6400/E6600 for $350/$450 (is there any sizable performance difference)

- 1G of generic DDR2 ram for around $170ish (any difference between brand names like Samsung or geil and generic)?

- Foxconn motherboard $150-200

- Leadtek Geforce 7900 GS $250 (once again any difference in brand? tehre seems to be like 30-40 dollars difference for exactly the same card)

- dvd burner $50

- power supply + case $100

If this is for games, then no an E6400 won't matter (for the video card you have chosen). If you were getting a faster graphics card, then yes. The E6600 is around ~300MHz faster and has 4MB cache instead of 2MB.

Geil is a good brand for RAM. Samsung won't be too bad either. Generic isn't a huge issue, but performance-wise it might not be as consistent and I wouldn't attempt to overclock anything much.

It's a good idea to research your motherboards before you buy them. If you aren't planning to overclock, it makes your job alot easier. However some motherboards are inherently more stable than others.

The only standout performer in the 7900GS crowd is the Gainward 512MB. That thing overclocks to 7900GTX clocks.

If I were you, I'd get a slower processor and 2GB RAM and a faster graphics card. For an extra $150, you could get a 256MB X1900XT which woops the daylights out of that 7900GS. If you're going to get 1GB of RAM, atleast get a 1GB stick, not 2x512MB sticks.

Hopefully the PSU isn't generic and too low in wattage. However since you're getting it with the case, chances are you can't do much about that.

Depends where you shop.
If you go to a PC fair you might be able too, but you're taking a risk that something on't work and you wont be able to find the supplier again.

If you're buying your parts from somewhere like Harvey Norman, you probably won't et a system like that for less than $2000
