Off the top of my head, going into the cupboard transports the characters and the audience to a new, imaginative world, and the work is an allegory for Christian values (you'll find that a lot of imaginative journeys use their imaginative nature to explore and comment on the author's society). Sorry it's brief, but that's what springs to mind first.
