I am quite interested in applying however you are expected to work at least 4 days a week after July 2014?

note - the initial requirement will be at least 4 days from the end of June to November and flexibly thereafter
How am I supposed to study and work at the same time?

How am I supposed to study and work at the same time?
You get 4-7 hours off for uni lectures/tutorials, and you space it out to try and fit with the firm's work hours. Alot of cadets do night classes which is after work. A cadetship is full time work after all, you're not signing up for one or two days a week, this is a fairly large commitment to the firm.

It's also not recommended to be doing full time studies whilst working full time and hence why it takes you an extra year to finish your degree (unless you overload).

hey guys with some cadetships soon to open,
I have a question for the cadets/accountants/people who can offer any advice :)

How would you say the work-life balance is? I know this can vary between firms/fields of accounting, but it seems that it's generally harder to maintain than other occupations?

When firms ask for leadership, teamwork, communication skills (i.e., soft skills), what do they actually mean? Do they just want you to recount of experiences where you had to "..." and how you utilised your skills (STAR)?

Would you say that you find your job satisfying, as it seems that people perceive as to be monotonous? - "bean counters"

I think overall the work-life balance is no better/worse than you're going to find in any other commerce related job, obviously there are going to be jobs with less hours, such as government departments but there are also plenty of jobs with much longer hours so make of it what you will. It's also going to come down to the culture of the firm which varies place to place.

When firms are asking about those qualities you don't have to just give an example every time but in my opinion it's a pretty good way to get your answer across. You'll find you probably won't be asked straight out what leadership/communication/teamwork etc means to you but be asked to describe times when you have demonstrated these qualities which is important. This occurs generally from the very first stage of the application (you'll see what I mean when they start to open)

In all honesty I find my work interesting every day, depending on your division/interests this can change of course but I think as a cadet you have so much to learn every things going to be new for a long time. Even when it's not the clients are going to vary making no two tasks exactly the same.

I think "bean counter" and associated connotation are pretty outdated and the term "accountant" is so widely used these days that it covers everything from a basic bookkeeper, to a management accountant, to a specialist on international taxation, to auditor, so don't let it play on your mind too much. An "accountant" in no way captures what most people do on a day-to-day basis at most firms!

Thanks for the detailed response, Jinks! Yeah whilst the majority of the cadetships seem to be opening after the ICAA cadetship evening, some opportunities have opened up already! :D

Strongly suggest going to the ICAA info evening! I went to similar events and met some HR people at them who I later ran into at interviews and the likes, was definitely an advantage having spoken to them before :)

Wow that's actually really awesome! I wouldn't have thought that you actually get to talk to the actual HR people. Keeeeeen :D

They will be the ones promoting the firm,along with other employees. If you leave a good impression it might last enough for them to help you in your first stage or so of the application ;)

Exactly this, and even if they aren't the HR people you may find the representatives from the firms are those that help out during assessment centres or do firm tours, so it all counts if they can put in a good word!

I would also recommend going to the information nights held by the bigger firms such as PwC, EY and KPMG. You'll learn more about their organisation and you will have more time to speak to employees or HR representatives than at the ICAA since you have over 20 firms to get around to at ICAA. Funnily enough, I met the head HR recruiter at EY's information night and left a pretty good impression. He turned out to be the HR recruiter for audit (which I applied for) and he was also one of the two interviewers who interviewed me. Note that you will have to register for these nights so keep an eye out for when they are held. From memory, they are usually held not long after the online applications are opened.

Some people attend those events and think the people from the business who aren't necessarily directly involved in recruitment or HR also can make a difference- especially if you end up working for them in the future.

Looking at the UBS forms is giving my chills. Performing quite well for everything besides maths which they probably care about a lot. lel

hey, did any of u cadets do the financial services course at TAFE while u were in year 11&12? if so, is it similar to what u r doing right now and is the knowledge gained from doing it helpful? does doing this course give u any advantage when applying for cadetships?

Sorry to bother everyone. But does knowing a cadet give me some advantage for a vacationers spot? Cause it turns out 1 of my new uni mates is a cadet a PwC :L

Cadets at some big4 firms can recommend a friend and actually receive monetary reward if you're through. After one whole year at Macquarie you just met one cadet?

Well so far nobbody at Macquarie Uni really look like they give a stuff about the big 4, well thats how it feels anyway. And cadets only come 1 day/week? so its extremely unlikely to meet a cadet at uni especially Mac. Cant wait tho to apply, already got loads of EC's just need to maintain my grades. Also my mum's friend works in Deloitte. I can put her down for networking too yeah?

Hey guys! I didn't receive a cadetship last year so I'll be reapplying this year (at least I have some interview experience now hahah).

Do you guys think that I should reapply for firms which I have been rejected by in the face to face interview stage or would that come off as poor form? (mainly curious for BDO)

There is no harm in applying, if they didn't like you in the interview stage at all they might not progress your application this time around however, if perhaps you performed well but there was just that one person who did a bit better then you should be fine!

Although I do suppose they could ask in the interview why you think you might not have progressed last year.
