Recently I have been thinking of what i want to do when i graduate and I keep changing my mind. I am somewhat thinking of doing medicine or allied health after school but don’t have bio or chem in my subjects. Is it still possible to pursue a degree in this field without these subjects. I could always take bridging courses right? If not i was thinking of doing a late switch to chem or even bio but this would be extremely hard with catch up+ the teacher doesn’t seem to want me in the class.
Currently I do
- Physics
- Economics
- Earth and Environmental Science
- Math extension 1
- English Advanced
- Modern ( gonna drop this for yr 12)

It honestly depends on what field in allied health; nutrition and dietetics, optom, pharmacy, Physio etc. Generally, you can get into the courses without doing bio and chem in HSC, however it may a bit of a struggle in terms of content.

I reckon you will be fine. Most unis are only assumed knowledge which you can 100% do bridging courses for. If you want to make sure, go onto the uni course's website and it will say if its necessary or not.

yea lad. most unis have assumed knowledge for degrees, they just assume you know these subjects and dont need a recap during uni. it isnt mandatory to do assumed knowledge subjects, you can get in without doing them. you can also do bridging courses which recap subjects such as chem and provide u with the foundational knowledge youll need to understand the uni content youll learn

i have both adhd and autism. i used to struggle a lot with grades but ive being able to improve to averaging 90s. heres some of the stuff i did and i would recommend you do to

-if you are unmedicated for adhd, ask your doctor about medication. being medicated has had an extreme difference on my grades and motivation. i also used to take medication that lasted for 8 hours, but switched to a 12 hour one so that i can study a bit longer

-get into a study routine. start studying at the same time every single day, finish at the same time everyday. do it EVERY DAY (i dont do weekends though). do it in the same place as well, do not study on your bed. this was also very very significant in my grades improving

-i personally study about 5 hours a day, whereas most people do 3. unfortunately if you have slow processing speed like me, sometimes you need to put in more effort than others to get the same results. yea its unfair, but you just gotta push through. im not saying studying 5 hours a day, but just know that your study requirements will differ to others.

-write your own notes. writing notes can seem annoying, but it really helps a lot with memorisation, especially since youre forced to actually understand concepts to write notes in your own words. handwriting notes takes longer, but it helps a lot more with memorisation.

-if you need exam provisions, ask for them.

also keep in mind that i do low scaling subjects, meaning i have less pressure on me as compared to taking bio and what not.

also if you do switch schools and redo, low scaling subjects really arent that bad. the scaling is bad yes, but the thing is if you do really well, scaling will not effect you much at all. most people who do low scaling subjects put in zero effort, so you have way less competition. assessments also tend to be less hard.

Consider taking year 12 again as the final option. There are many other pathways to school and staying back a year is imho the most inefficient one

keep in mind that its not a good idea to take medications just because someone else toke that medication and it worked for them. you should talk to your doctor first about what adhd medication is best for you, since adhd medications do differ in how effective they are for certain people, and if theyll have negative side effects for you

also adhd medications may not even work for you or be appropiate, hence why you should talk to whoevers treating you at the moment to see if its appropiate

Please don't discourage splitting Year 12. It's a smarter option than rushing into a university course you don’t want, which can cost $10,000-$15,000 and hurt your chances of getting into your dream course. Uni is harder than high school in terms of workload and difficulty, plus you miss out on adjustment factors when competing with current Year 12s. If you still don’t get into the degree and go the postgraduate route, you could end up wasting 2-3 more years and $100,000, with no guarantee of success.

No, the comment that I replied to was considering retaking Year 12. I'm not encouraging them to rush into uni, I'm saying that there are alternate pathways to uni such that they don't have to repeat year 12 (which I reiterate, is imo the worst way to spend your time if your goal is uni)

I believe there's been a misunderstanding. The original comment was about splitting Year 12 over two years, not retaking it. This approach can be a smart way to manage workload and improve results, without the pressure of rushing into a university course that might not be the right fit. Skipping this option could cost more time and money in the long run if the alternative is starting a course you're not fully committed to.

if you had the chance, you could've done Human Services, a EVET course that would have given you a pathway to university straightaway by applying internally from TAFE or NSW Health and you wouldn't have to worry about ATAR or Early Entry if you were trying to get into Allied Health or Nursing

Depends which allied health degree, you wouldn't be able to go to Physio or OT straight from TAFE. Would have to do exercise and sports science followed by a masters degree.
