hey i'm doing a 1-to-1 connection. my old comp has win98se and is connected to optus cable. my new comp has xp and is using a cross over cable to connect to my old comp. now i've got the net working, but i can't share. like i've right-clicked on C: and enabled sharing but when i access my network places/network neighbourhood i can't see the other computer.

also, internet connection sharing on my win98 says it is not sharing internet to any computer, yet my winxp is online... wtf?

A easy network connection would be:

Check:
*cables
*IP settings - IP, gateway, WINS (if needed), DNS
*Workgroup/Domain
*File/Folder/Print sharing settings
*Internet Sharing Config (Host) / LAN settings (Client)

This can very well be a Firewall issue, if u have it on, turn it off.
