i is the name given to √-1. Ie i²=-1.

You will also see z which often stands for x+iy.

They are called complex numbers, with i being an imaginary number and iy the imaginary compent.

They have a fair few uses in computing and electrical engineering.

You won't be able to hide it completly. Unless they use a html email system it will just show up with the tags. As this forum is HTML enabled however, you could use HTML tags which would foil HTML enabled emails, but then you have to pick a colour that is hard to see on white as well. =) It is also visible with styleid 5, hmmm I wonder if there is a style id 4.

You can memorise the extended version of the binomial theorem (to help you when n is not an integer).... but you have to prove the theorem each time you use it.
