solve for x:

( 2x-1)/5 = (x/3) -1

The answer is -12 but I just don't understand how to work it out
Thanks!!

Times 5 to both sides:

2x - 1 = 5x/3 - 5

Minus 5x/3 from both sides and add 1:

x/3 = -4

Times by 3:

x = -12

State ranking in general maths inc

( 2x-1)/5 = (x/3) -1
5[( 2x-1)/5] =5[(x/3) -1]
2x - 1 = 5(x/3) - 5
2x - 1 = 5x/3 - 5
3(2x - 1) = 3(5x/3 - 5)
6x - 3 = 3(5x/3) - 3(5)
6x - 3 = 5x - 15
6x - 5x = -15 + 3
x = -12
