Career Advice? Engineering or Actuarials? (1 Viewer)

Hello, this is my first post so please excuse me if I have posted this in the wrong section.

I have just finished year 12 and have selected both ANU Actuarial studies and ANU Engineering as two different preferences on my UAC registration. My UAI should be high enough for me not to worry about the cut-offs, but my problem is which one should I choose? Would someone be able to give me some sort of comparison of the work load etc.? I've read the stickied thread on Actuarial studies so I sort of have an idea on what it is like but I'm still not sure what Engineering is like.

My plan at the moment is to do the first year at ANU and finish my degree in UNSW for either Actuarial Studies or Engineering. Would someone be able to confirm whether or not I can transfer to UNSW after my first year? I understand ANU has a general engineering course for the first year so hopefully it shouldn't impose too many problems.

Finally, I wanted to ask about the double degrees. I know that the Actuarial Studies/Finance is the preferred choice but I don't particularly want to do finance Would Economics or Commerce synergise as well and what kind of careers opportunities will it lead to. For Engineering, I wanted to perhaps do some consulting work later on. What kind of double degree would go well for that?

Do you know what sort of career you want to pursue in the future? It'll be better for our evaluation if you are aware. Both engineering and actuarial studies are maths intensive and either degree would give you a very solid choice of perspective jobs if you want to work in the commerce-related fields.

If you want to transfer to UNSW, my recommendation would be to choose courses which aren't known to be excessively difficult- because when Unis look at potential external transferees, they only look at the GPA you received unless otherwise specified. So someone who scored a 70 average in ANU law has almost no advantage over someone who scored 70 average for basket weaving at TAFE, while ANU law is arguably more difficult than basket weaving at TAFE. There is almost no point doing very challenging courses if you want to transfer, due to the fact that it's harder to score highly and there's a good chance you won't receive credit when you transfer.

I want to pursue a maths related career in future although I'm not too particularly keen on research and prefer a more business orientated job.
The reason why I asked about transfers is because my parents have agreed to financially support me in Sydney's UNSW but they want me to stay in Canberra for the first year. I personally don't mind but I am unsure whether or not the transfer is possible between ANU and UNSW for Actuarial Studies or Engineering.
