I get these error messages from Nero when i try to burn things: "No Seek Complete", "Cannot Perform EndTrack", "Power Communication Failure" and then another one about SCSI (i dont have anything SCSI related). I can get a successful burn around 40% of the time though.
I did some experimenting using crappy CDs and found that lower speeds (4x) without Multi-session and with DAO works best. Also there isn't any problem burning on CD-RW and 90% it works when doing CD-CD.

Do you think its the burner's or the computer's fault?

CD-RW model?
The age would be nice,

Nero registered? (Via legal means?)
Checked the connections?
Make sure the cables are connected (snug fit)
Watch out for loose connections, etc.

Dust?
Reinstalled Nero?
Tried moving your CD-RW to another 5.12" bay?
Tried using different IDE cables? (New ones?)

Lastly,
try using different burning software ie CDRWIN, CloneCD, Fireburner, etc to see if it's not a Nero related issue.

1. Check your hardware (inside and out)
2. Check software (uninstall, reboot, reinstall)
3. Try other software

I recommend Nero, although I am still a supporter of CDRWIN.

I've tried other programs and they give a range of assorted error messages. Even CDRWIN.

I've had the burner for around 2 years and in the first 7 months it has worked perfectly.
I've used new cables and have changed the burner from being primary slave to secondary slave.

Its an Acer 10x8x32x.

Oh and does anyone know why my CD-ROM (50x) reads slower than my burner (32x)?
The speed when reading varies a lot from 100kb/s to 1.5mb/s or something.

Have you tried making it your secondary master?
(Hard disk being primary master).

Tried using a variety of different media?
You have a 10x burner,
Are you burning at 10x? or have you tested it at 8, 6, 4, 2, 1x?
Whatever the lowest speed is, for that CD-R medium (blank).

"No Seek Complete"
"Cannot Perform EndTrack"
"Power Communication Failure"
"SCSI Target Error"
"Invalid Write State"

Do you have any friends who can test your drive?
i.e. using your Acer burner in someone else's computer

Have you tried downloading the demonstration version of Nero 6? (I believe it is 6.0.0.11)

What kind of cds are you using? Are they high-speed (or 'ultra-speed') compatible?

I can't think of anything else atm, sorry :(

What kind of PSU are you running? Are you sure it's up to scratch with your burner power-requirements? (Just a thought)

What kind of things are you burning?
MODE1, MODE2? Audio? Data? Mixed Mode? RAW? DAO?

Test to see what files can and cannot be burnt.
You might want to burn audio cds solely,
then move onto data cds,
then you can try multi-session discs. Give that a whirl and see what works and what doesn't, narrowing your problem.

Have you recently updated your firmware? Flashed anything?

Have you tried burning CDs in 'simulation' or test modes? How did it go?

Maybe your drive is just old, 2 years+
(Although my 6 year old Matsushita 4x CD-R is on it's last leg)

Last resort: time to get a new burner?
$85 to 100 goes a very long way these days in terms of CD-writing drives.

I bought a new Lite-On 48x24x48x16 COMBO drive (includes 16x DVD-ROM with the 48/24/48X CD-RW).

Latest specials
ASUS 52x24x52 CDRW $66.00
Liteon DVD+CDRW Combo Drive 48x24x48x16 (My one :)) $102

If you want the Liteon in black, it'll be $120
(Stick with beige and save $18 ;))

Sorry Dave to hear about your problem.

Yeah. Secondary master has been tried.
I've used a bunch of different media on all the speeds possible and theres still errors.

Yeh! I get those errors!

I get errors in every mode (Data, audio, mode1, mode2).

I can't narrow the problem because everytime i find settings that i feel will work, a few burns later it creates another coaster. The weird thing is that it burns perfectly with the special settings one time, coasters the next and it'll be fine again the next and so on. I can't predict when it's going to work. I've tried disabling everything that takes up the CPU.

I haven't flashed anything. I don't even know how to.

I've tried test modes. It usually passes the test but errors come up during the actual burn. For most of the time errors come up right after the burn begins.

I'm not sure about the PSU. All i know is that it worked before and the power was right back then.

I'm trying Nero 6 now but it'll take a while to test this.

I haven't tried it in anyone else's computer yet. I'll take a while to test my burner there as well.

Thanks Huy for your help

Actually i have. I've formatted my PC quite a few times. I've done a complete clean format, installed WinXP, Nero and then tried burning but it almost always gives a few errors before it burns properly.

Update your firmware. Go to your burners manufacture site and it should tell you how to do it.

In reference to -X-,
he got me with the quote.

You haven't flashed your firmware, and you don't know how to.
-X- quoted what I had quoted, pointing out that visiting the manufacturer's website will tell you how to flash it.

That's why I said "touche" :)

Clonecd and Alcohol 120% are one of the best for copy protected cd's. Also, if you are running XP, disable the built-in burning function it supports if your not going to use it. Its known to cause problems with other burning s/w. To disable it:
My Computer -> Right Click on your burner drive -> Properties -> Recording TAB -> uncheck "enable CD recording on this drive".

:)

He's not trying to copy SafeDisc 2.0, Cdilla, and other forms of copy protection.

His burner doesn't work.
(I'm a cdrwin, blindwrite+daemon tools guy, but ccd and alcohol will do the trick too ;))

lol i was a blindwrite, cdrwin guy once. :p But with CloneCD i found that it was able to do a perfect copy of every form of Copy Protected CD's i threw at it, which means no need for cracks for games (with the correct settings ofcourse) + ClonyXL which scanned the cd for copy protection and loaded CLONECD with the correct settings. Although the new versions of ClonyXL dont have the ability to apply the settings u need, just identify the type of copy protection (due to legal troubles i believe).

But like i said, disable built in XP burning if you dont use it!
