who's doing changing self?

what sort of materials would be best suited to changing self?
and do we need a wide variety of different materials ?

i m doing Gwen Harwood (poetry) and since the BOS booklet has a short story... should i go for a cartoon or a newspaper article?

i did harwood last year and my advice is that newspaper articles and cartoons aren't substantial texts. they don't illustrate the indepth techniques you get out of novels and films, nor do they allow for the same level of analysis

read my earlier thread as to texts that work well for this aos

the thing with newspaper articles is they're hard to use for substantial analysis. it can be done but it's not advisable if you want to get in the top band
i know it takes a lot longer to study a novel or film but that's why it generally gets you better marks -there are more techniques, indepth analysis, ideas raised etc

dont forget songs/song lyrics
I used the Creed song - with arms wide open for changing self, since there was plenty to talk about, both aurally and written, in association with change...plus the fact it was one of our assessments :p

I did Harwood, and my related texts were

Sky High from the BOS booklet
Regarding Henry (film) - Mike Nichol <--- this is terrific - has lots of film techniques to talk about
Hither Dear Child (feature article) - Hugh Mackay
Through a Glass Darkly (novel) - Jostein Gaarder

I disagree about the feature articles - I managed to find loads of good techniques in my one anyway...

A really useful thing I did before I wrote any essays was to draw up a table with each of my texts along the rows and columns. In each cell of the table was how each text related to another text - it gives you real flexibility in structure... allows you to adapt your essay to the question really well because you can link all your texts up well.

hey come to think of it the Creed song is pretty good for change.... :)

the problem with me is that as i do Gwen Harwood, and if i also do 'The door' in the BoS booklet, and i go searching for another poem.... that wouldn't be much of a variety... (my teacher said that this could be bad)

well if u do the door, and the creed song, there is a lot of linkage there, in terms of the theme of embracing change

Creed
With Arms Wide Open
4:34

Well I just heard the news today
It seems my life
is going to change
I closed my eyes,
begin to pray
Then tears of joy stream down my face

With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open
With arms wide open

Well I don't know
if I'm ready
To be the man
I have to be
I'll take a breath,
take her by my side
We stand in awe,
we've created life

increase in volume

With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open
Now everything has changed
I'll show you love
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open
With arms wide open
(diminished)

I'll show you everything , ar yeah
With arms wide open wide open (repetition)

(guitar section symbolises his change, his new freedom, his new self)

If I had just one wish
Only one demand
I hope he's not like me
I hope he understands
That he can take this life
And hold it by the hand
And he can greet the world
With arms wide open
(climax)

Chorus:
With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open
Now everything has changed
I'll show you love
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open
With arms wide open

I'll show you everything , ar yeah
With arms wide open wide open

it's a pretty good one on changing self... certainly more variety is better.. e.g doing gwen harwood and another poem, on top of the poem on changing self in the BoS booklet might be bad and restrict the marks

notes? haven't done any yet.... or are you asking MiniAi?

Ill put my assessment on it up tomorrow (sunday)
We had to write a radio interview, based on an unseen/unheard text, and write from the perspective of the songwriter telling the interviewer how his song (With arms wide open) relates to changing self, through the meaning, process, consequences and techniques of the actual song

u'll need to actually listen to the song too, rather than read the lyrics, because there are clever aural features used (eg the soft thumping at the beginning, symbolic of the imminent baby's heart beating)

basically, the change is in the personna of the song, where he realises that change is coming, and that he has to change becase it's required for the benefit of others (ie, the newborn baby)

ooo newborn baby.. didn't think of that one...

i just thought that he had a relationship and needed to have his 'arms wide open' to accept his change of inner self and to expose himself more...
