At Orica, each 1000tonnes of ethane produces about 780tonnes of ethene. Calculate the amount of Hydogen you would expect produced with each 780tonnes of ethene

Hmm... That's odd.. Regardless to everything else(the actual numbers and chemical equations), the chemical equation for the production of ethene from ethane is thought to be:

Ethane --> Ethene + Hydrogen

Therefore it follows that 1000tonnes of ethane should produce 1000-780 tonnes = 220 tonnes of Hydrogen accroding to mass conservation

but when you look at the chemical formula of it:

C2H6 --> C2H4 + H2
1mole --> 1mole+ 1 mole

Ethane: C2H6
Ethene: C2H4
Hydrogen: H2

Molecular weight of Ethane: 12x2 + 6 = 30 g/mole
Molecular weight of Ethene: 12x2 + 4 = 28 g/mole
Molecular weight of Hydrogen: 2 g/mole

Moles of Ethane
10^9/30 = 3.3333333x10^7 mole

Therefore the same amount of moles of ethene and hydrogen will be produced:
3.3333333x10^7 mole

Mass of ethene produced by 1000tonnes of ethane:
(3.3333333x10^7)x28
=9.33333333x10^8 g
=933.33 tonnes

And only 66.67 tonnes of Hydrogen will be produced

Where did you get the question and do you have the answers?

P.S. be patient will ya? why would anyone want to answer a question for a rude person?
