Hey all,

I just heard that you needed to actually pass the final exam to pass the course. Is this true even if you already have enough marks (e.g. 30% marks) to allow for a fail of the exam?

Cheers

That's what they said. But I think they are just trying to encourage you to study more!
Good luck! The final is really hard :D

Some courses this is an actual requirement of the course, called a hurdle requirement, ie, you have to pass the exam and assignments to actually pass the course (even if your final raw mark is over 50).

Thanks for the responses.

I asked a chem tutor about this today and she said you need to be 'close' to the pass mark in order to pass. What do you guys reckon she means by close?

Probably >=45, depending on your WAM as well, like the PC concession algorithm.

if you get around 45-49 in the chem1011 final, they may allow you to pass if the rest of your work has been up to scratch.

I didn't think chem fy was that hard compared to phys:mad:. Second session I thought was a bitch. Though I don't know first hand for CHEM1011 or if you have any chem in your background.

Who was/were your lecturers? I pity you if you had Dr. Lamb ~ he is funny and does lots of research, but you learn diddly-squat.

On second thoughts ... ... 2000 exam looks evil.

My friend was pretty sure he failed the final coz he didn't attempt half of the exam paper. He managed to get 50 or 51.

I think it is your overall mark that is the most important for a pass in chem.

Did you guy had your chem exam today? (firday)

Meh you forgot the fudge factor!!!! If the exam mark * fudge factor > 50% then it's alright... I'm sure they did that to first year physics student last year.

Edit: Noo...... sunny beat me in posting!!

MUHAHAH, yeah, all subjects that have "chem" a part of them are evil. They always make the exam start on friday of the stuvac for some reason. So so evil...

If you do bioCHEM next year, that's another friday start :p

Yes, it is a hell of a lot more evil next semester. Don't know how I got through.

Biochem? Two friends of mine won't shut up about how easy it is. Didn't five people get full marks in the mid-session... perhaps it is a different biochem.

Midsessions mean diddly squat. Hell, I got quite decent marks for my mid sessions but I don't expect anywhere near those kinds of marks for my finals. Midsessions are easy because they don't cover much material and don't go into any detail.
