Im in a dilemma of choosing between USYD and UNSW for chemical engineering. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the course at both the univerisities.

What do you want to know about ChE @ Sydney?

If you go to USYD, you should do Flexible First Year (the programs are the same) instead of ChE so you can give yourself more options if you want to switch later. A lot of people come in with the idea of doing one stream but switch to another later on.

it's basically up to you to look at the course outlines and work out which you like the best. any opinion (such as the one i am about to deliver) will be extremely biased :)

UNSW isn't a social uni compared to usyd
but at UNSW if you're an engineer you can make heaps of arts student jokes, whereas at USyd engineers are a downtrodden minority and most of the jokes are directed at them.... (well this is my understanding anyway)

i can't make a comparison between USyd and UNSW in terms of how "social" the uni is, but it basically just comes down to how involved you decide to become in things.

at any uni, if you just turn up to classes then leave, you're not going to find it a very social experience.

I know people who have chosen flexible first year at UNSW, and while it sounds good on paper, in practice its just a massive inconvenience because when you pick your desired "stream" you may not have completed all the required first year subjects so it stuffs up your timetable for second year or you may have to do summer session (blerk!)

it's best and simpler just to start a specific engineering course. you can still transfer (i know many who have done this), and it's not too bad.

but flexible first year just doesn't seem that good (at least at the moment)

good luck with your uni applications and enjoy the holidays!!

* Look at the degree structure. See how many subjects you have to study per semester (e.g. 4 subjects per semester). Look at how each uni has divided up their subjects. Does one have more laboratory class than others?

* Look at contact hours per week. Are you looking at working while studying (usually you don't have much choice in first year, 20s hours per week is pretty much the standard)

* Look at the electives / specialisation in your degree. How much freedom you get. How many subjects you can choose. Do you like any particular area in Chem Eng?

* Visit the uni to get the feel of the facilities. Seeing is beliving.

This might also help: apparently (from their website) UNSW has the only RACI certified B Eng (Chemical) in Australia.

However, I may be wrong. I'm trying to find out if that's true ; I don't think it is because I can remember reading on their old website that Sydney's was certified, and I'm pretty sure other ChE degrees from UNCLE/Monash allow you to become a MRACI C Chem/FRACI.

I've sent the RACI an e-mail to find out.
