how long have you been living in hong kong for? were you born there?
what kind of school did you go to in hong kong (e.g. international school, local school etc.)
i'm not sure, but i'm leaning towards the background speakers course because you can speak cantonese and little bits of mandarin. what type of chinese do you learn in the course anyhow?
also, are your parents native speakers?

I think you would have to do background speakers cause you went to school in HK.

Isn't the Chinese Continuers all mandarin? So, you would only have 2 years to get to a level where you can compete with either Native Mandarin speakers or those who have been studying it longer then you have?

You should really consult your chinese teacher...I know for a fact that if your parents are native speakers, you're ineligible for beginners (even it you're born here)...I came here in year 3 (from china) and I'm ineligible for both beginners and continuers (I speak mandarine and can read and write a little)
