Beijing insisted it was opposed to an arms race in space after Japan and Britain joined a chorus of concern over a satellite-killing missile test by China - the first known experiment of its type in more than 20 years.
The United States says China used a ground-based ballistic missile to shoot apart an ageing weather satellite on January 11, scattering dangerous debris that could damage other satellites and raising risks of escalating military rivalry in outer space.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman refused to confirm or deny the incident, but said Beijing wanted no arms race in space.

"I can't say anything about the reports. I really don't know; I've only seen the foreign reports," Liu Jianchao told Reuters.

What I can say is that, as a matter of principle, China advocates the peaceful use of space and opposes the weaponisation of space, and also opposes any form of arms race," he said.
US concerns were quickly echoed by Australia and Canada, and then by Japan, which has become increasingly concerned about its giant neighbour's rising military strength.
"We are concerned about it firstly from the point of view of peaceful use of space and secondly from the safety perspective," Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki told a news conference.
Tokyo is trying to mend fences broken by disputes with China over their wartime history, competition for resources and regional influence. But it has also called for more transparency from Beijing on its defence spending, which China announced last March would rise by 14.7 per cent rise to $US35.3 billion ($A44.8 billion).
Britain added its voice to the alarm over China's reported move, with Prime Minister Tony Blair's spokesman telling reporters "we have concerns about the impact of debris in space and we've expressed that concern".
The last US anti-satellite test took place in 1985. Washington then halted such Cold War-era testing, concerned that debris could harm civilian and military satellite operations.
Blair's spokesman said Britain did not believe the China's test had contravened international law, but it was concerned by the lack of consultation.
The test was "inconsistent with the spirit of China's statement to the UN and other bodies on the military use of space", he added.
Tokyo has asked the Chinese government for confirmation that the satellite-killing missile test took place and for an explanation of what China's intentions were, Shiozaki said.
"When we passed on the message, the Chinese side said they would take Japan's concerns into account and that they want to maintain the peaceful use of space," a Japanese foreign ministry official said.
According to David Wright of the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Union of Concerned Scientists, the satellite pulverised by China could have broken into nearly 40,000 fragments from 1 cm to 10 cm - or up to 4 inches - roughly half of which would stay in orbit for more than a decade.
The United States has been researching satellite-killers of its own, experimenting with lasers on the ground that could disable, disrupt and destroy spacecraft.
Marco Caceres, a space expert at the Teal Group, an aerospace consulting firm in Fairfax, Virginia, said China's test could bolster a host of costly military space programs, almost all of which are over budget and behind schedule.

China really poses a threat??

Bring on a race to create space based military equipment

The technology that would come out of that would be phenomenal, consider the two things that drove technology the most in the 20th century were:
- The wars (I, II and Cold)
- The space race
If you put the 2 together then:

1. China vs USA developing military equipment that can be used in space
2. Cool stuff is invented
3. ...
4. PROFIT

it is a very expensive idea, the space race, to get anything into space is going to cost a fortune, and to think they want to send something up there to destroy another thing, just out of my imagination.

maybe star wars VIII: china vs the us??

Where does it say "westernisation of space"?
sorry i misread
i'm on drugs or something

Anyway the Australian Government's POV:
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,21086535-663,00.html

AUSTRALIA has joined a host of nations, including the US, to voice their concern after China conducted a weapons test in space.
China's ambassador Fu Ying was called in to meet Australian Foreign Affairs Department deputy secretary Peter Grey to explain the incident.

Launched from a fired medium-range ballistic missile, a "kinetic kill vehicle" knocked out an ageing Chinese weather satellite 865km above Earth on January 11 by slamming into it.

Ms Fu undertook to get more information from Beijing. China's Defence Ministry refused to confirm it conducted the test.

If true, it is the first known satellite-killing test in space since the US tested such a weapon in 1985.

Tests stopped because of concerns debris could harm civilian and military satellite operations on which the West increasingly relies for everything from pinpoint navigation to internet access to ATMs.

The satellite could have been pulverised into 40,000 fragments 1cm to 10cm long, said David Wright, of the Union of Concerned Scientists based in the US.

Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer, in New York, said the world wanted to avoid a space arms race.

"What we don't want to see is some sort of spread, if you like, of an arms race into outer space," he said.

"The danger there is that you get into a situation where other countries, including the US, I suppose, would have to start to look for ways to protect satellites in space.

"The other concern is that the debris from the destroyed satellite could hit other satellites and damage (them)," he said.

A DFAT spokesman said the Government had sought an explanation about the Chinese Government's plans for developing and deploying weapons systems with the capability of destroying space assets.

The US, Canada and Japan also voiced concerns to China over the space test last week. Britain and South Korea were expected to follow.

"The US believes China's development and testing of such weapons is inconsistent with the spirit of co-operation that both countries aspire to in the civil space area," US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki suggested China's lack of transparency over its military development could trigger suspicions about its motives.

Analysts said China's weather satellites would travel at about the same altitude as US spy satellites, so the test, though using old technology, represented an indirect threat to US defence systems.

The capability was no surprise to the Bush Administration, which revised US national space policy last year to assert a right to deny space access to anyone hostile to US interests.

No country is anywhere near the US in terms of conventional and technological military capacity, hasn't been for about 20 years and won't be for at least a century or so.

An arms race especially tho ones in space will be in favour of USA. Just look at how costly nuclear arms and space race between USA and USSR bankrupted the then superpower USSR. With a GDP of 2.25 trillion US $ (CIA fact book) can't just compete with USA with a GDP of nearly 13 Trillion US $.

It will be at least another 100 years before we see chinese Aircraft carrier patrolling the atlantic ocean;)

The fact that US military spending is more than the next 10 countries combined is also a bit of a giveaway.

I find it rather stupid that the US is the only country that's allowed to do anything.
Thats the point of being a Superpower.

Also, I find it ironic someone with the nickname "Aryanbeauty" has an Israeli flag in both their signature and their avatar.

I also find it hard to believe that someone with an American flag in their avatar, whilst living in Australia, can stand to be unbiased.
Does monkey avatar means you are unbiased:rofl: . Hiv are believed to be transmitted from monkeys in central africa. Does that means you have HIV  LOL

Who cares about who is biased? What's important is that the satellite killing tests were successful. More power to China - it becomes more prepared for the showdown with the US because satellites are vital to the conducting of modern warfare.

usa right now is way ahead of any other country in term of conventional weapons tech. It will take china or india atleast 20 years to have something similiar to f-22 or b-2 and by that time usa would have something even better. But the difference is reducing slowly. If u compare the military might of usa to china in 1960 and now there is considerable difference. Right now china has icbms that can reach usa, china is no match if the fight was just a conventional one but that wouldnt be the case if a war ever occured. In terms of navy and airforce, even India today is superior to china, so china has a long way to go before it is anywhere near usa, though china's army and missile tech is much more advance then India.

The difference between russia and china compared to usa is that, in russia's case it had the economy no where near that of usa but a military which was comparable. In china's case it would be the other way round, in 15 years time in terms of ppp china will have a economy as big as usa and in terms of gdp it will have a economy the size of usa in 35-40 years time.

But usa will be a important player in geo politics for a long time to come, imo atleast for the next 200 years there are only 2 countries that have any chance of having an economy bigger then usa and they are china and india.

i think china is about 15-20 years behind (according to usa) usa in military technology on average but i think the gap is narrowing fast.

one thing i know for sure about china is that when it reveals a new technology it has already advanced onto something better that nobody knows about because they keep it so secretive.

Shame on Truman.

If it weren't for him, MacArthur would have cleansed both North Korea and China of communism in 1951.

According to SBS World News (ill try to find a web source that will back this) but the Chinese are currently:-

- Attempting to build its first Aircraft Carrier
- Buying (from Russia) and building Nuclear Class Submarines
- Building a new line of Military Aircraft

The peoples army is 2.8million strong (biggest army in the world)
Military spending has doubled to over $30 billion since 2001

And they are attempting to created surface to space technology that would be able to knock out low orbit satallites.

There was soomething else but oh well. China ftw. Lawl.
dude i understand both the chinese and western mentality, and not building an aircraft carrier in the past doesn't mean they can't. they've obviously been developing missiles, subs, satellite killers to delay threats for now and save money at the same time. the fact that they are developing aircraft carriers (b4 it would appear vulnerable and expensive), navy and airforce just now shows they are ready to modernise.

LOL.

China doesn't have to attack America.

All China has to do is sell off American T-bills and America will be fucked but of course so will everyone else. China has been buying up U.S treasuries for decades and owns a huge part of America debt.
