I'm looking to do a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and Philosophy and have narrowed my options down to two possible unis' in Victoria: Melbourne Uni or ACU National (Melb). Just wondering what advice anyone could offer regarding advantages for each of the two offers (not just in terms of course structure and content, but student life. Etc). So, what do you think? Melb Uni or ACU?

Melbourne university is a lot stronger in terms of philosophy. It has quite a good reputation, a lot more staff and a great deal more in terms of course offerings (both current and potential). Sadly Melbourne is loosing one of their big philosophers (Graham Priest) in 2009. ACU has Raimond Gaita who is pretty interesting if you dig naturalistic approaches to ethics, but to balance that out Melbourne university is associated with the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics. If I had to pick an Australian university solely on the basis of Philosophy UMelb would be at, or around, the top of the list (alongside ANU).

I can't comment a great deal on psychology except to say that Melbourne university is likely to have more research opportunities if you want to keep the possibility of honours in psychology open.
