Need help on this question:

Describe the circumstances where would it be necessary to detect radiation.

Thx!

Er... like in a Lab?
You wouldn't want to be exposed to too much radiation... So you detect how much radiation is emitted from whatever. So you don't MUTANT INTO A MONSTER.

Section 5: Nuclear Chemistry

Describe the circumstances where would it be necessary to detect radiation.

Methods of detecting radiation in nuclear chemistry include:

Geiger Muller Tube:

This consists of a sealed glass tube with a mica window at one end. The gas inside the tube (argon - inert gas) is ionised by radiation, entering the tube. This causes a current to flow through the atttached circuit, which has a recording device included.

It is most effective for detecting beta particles; it can also detect alpha particles.

Photographic film:

Film can be used to measure indiviudal radiation exposure such is in badges worn by workers in dealing with radioactive materials. The film in these badges is developed regularly to check their degree of exposure. This is necessary for the safety of radioactive workers, and so the radiation doesn't spread widely among others, thus being harmful.

I hope that helps :).
