im not sure if this has been asked, but do u need to know the formula for citric acid and how to draw its structure, coz it seems like a big headache to me

if so does an1 have any easy way of remembring it

I am not sure about drawing the structure but you should know its formula, C6H8O7 (sorry I don't know how to write them on the comp properly) in case it comes up in an exam. As for an easy way to remember it, if I come up with one, I'll let you know first.

You're on the right track, its 2-hydroxypropane,1-2-3tricarboxylic acid. Citric acid is its common name.

Actually, both 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid and 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid are correct, although the syllabus uses the first of these names.

The condensed structure is:

HOOC-CH<sub>2</sub>-C(OH)(COOH)-CH<sub>2</sub>-COOH

just as the name suggests.

BTW there was a recent thread on citric acid ionisation that you might want to go find... :)

Thanks, I was having a bit of a headache myself trying to see if I could draw the structural formula because I wasn't really sure but that clears it right up for me!!!!!
