Does anyone here does it...? If yes, how are you finding it? Interesting, hard? What kinda work do you do?

Also, if you only do international studies, how are you finding it? I don't think I want to do it by itself because I think career opportunities are limited if you take this course alone. So hopefully I get the UAI to do the combined degree :D

The international studies degree does look awesome, check out what kind of units you'll be doing here. You're streamed according to whether you have an (HSC) knowledge of the language.

You'll only be doing one introductory law unit each semester, which is a bit of a bummer, but you'll be too flat-chat with your language units to worry about anything.

For some reason, you have less electives in the BIntStud LLB degree than the BIntStud alone... Not sure why.

Which leads me to the next point: If you don't get the 93ish required for the combined degree, go for the degree by itself at 83ish. You can then try to transfer into law second year. You'll just have to figure out why the combined law degree makes it have less electives, though, so keep that in mind. Speak to an academic advisor at uni about it when you get the chance. :)

What do you mean Im 'streamed' according to whether I have a HSC knowledge of the language? Im not doing any languages for my HSC. Im confused....

I want to do Mandarin because my mum speaks it and I understand quite a bit of it. If I can do 2 languages Im hoping to do advanced French because French is my first language but I think I need to brush up on my spelling, vocabulary etc (its been 6 years since Ive moved here from France so my French is getting rusty :S lol)

I think I need like 97 for the combined degree....? Lol dammit. But I dont want to do the degree alone (even though it'd be really interesting....the uai is like 85 btw) because I think there would be limited career opportunites. I know I might be able to transfer... but what if I dont? :S Then I would've wasted a year on this... wasted my money? Im planning to do Applied Finance by itself if I dont get into the combined degree.

Are you sure it's 97 UAI? Because I remember checking when offers were released last year, and it was something more like 93.xx.

93.50 to be exact.
Omg well actually Im not sure... In the UAC guide it just has the IFEE UAI which is 87 (and where you pay $19 200)... which is the same as the other combined law courses where the other course alone needs approx 85-86 UAI (like International Studies)

So I figured that it must be about the same UAI needed for the combined degree as with the other degrees.... Which is about 95.5-95.9... Oh yeah my bad its not 97 :p I thought it was around 96.5-96.9 so I just rounded it off to 97 hmmm yayy thats good for me! :D

But if its 93.5 then it's even better! Ive got a wayyy better chance of getting that... way wayyyy better lol.

For example, if you did HSC Chinese Continuers, you may be put in CHN222 instead of CHN111 for your first year.

I want to do Mandarin because my mum speaks it and I understand quite a bit of it.
Well if what you understand is an equivalent to HSC knowledge, you get tested by the department (simple conversation with the lecturer) and they'll sktick you in the right class.

If I can do 2 languages
Yes you can.

Im hoping to do advanced French because French is my first language but I think I need to brush up on my spelling, vocabulary etc (its been 6 years since Ive moved here from France so my French is getting rusty :S lol)

Well it doesn't seem like your very focussed on your goals. If you're even an above average student, you'll be able to internally transfer into Macquarie law.

And if you have that view on wasting money, maybe something boring like applied finance is for you. *shrug*

Well good luck with it all. :)

Im doing the bintstud and its a good course, mind you Im only in 1st year. And in relation to careers - it really depends what you want to do. It can help you get into government and Non government organisations, Foreign Affair reporting, historians, linguists, translators - there are literally thousands of jobs that you can get with it - Firms these days dont really care about the degree (unless its something like dr or lawyer) more your experience and what you actually did to get the degree rather than the name of the degree!

Lol well you gotta admit 6,000 or so is a lot to be throwing away. As my mum says "money doesnt drop out of the sky". Becoming like your parents is scary :|

But otherwise thanks heaps for the help! :) It sounds really interesting and I want to do it. Im just not 100% sure yet

Just remember that working as a 'diplomat' for the government isn't the only thing. You can work inside the government in a similar department, work inside a company which is subcontracted, etc etc.

My actual goal is to either work somwhere in DFAT (prefereably somewhere OS - In Europe) or with the UN again somewhere in Europe or even a NGO - but NGO's dont appeal to me as much as UN or DFAT....

Well make sure you start your languages early. Definitely try a year exchange to somewhere like Switzerland where you can get intensive exposure to German, French, and Italian.

And avoid Spanish unless you're planning on America (which is where most Spanish speakers reside...). :p

DFAT is alright but ASISis where it's at! Think CIA/MI6 (aka James Bond). Doesn't everyone want to be a spy, or is it just me?

Oh I do.

I would seriously make the best spy.

Noone would ever suspect the fat gay man in cons. :santa:

Wow:

Commencement salary in February 2008 will be generally $58,000 plus government superannuation
How am I supposed to afford expensive cars, hot women, and Bollinger on that salary? =/
