I'm asking this on behalf of my friend: "Will there be a significant disadvantage in not doing commerce and/or economics courses during high school and then doing it at University"?

Maybe doing econ/business studies would make first year subjects slightly easier to grasp, but I found it no huge advantage. Infact HSC econ was pretty wishy washy compared to the level of learning expected at university. (just my humble opinion)

Basically all your units will be 'Intro this' or "Intro that' and build your knowledge from the ground up.

Don't stress too much about it.

No you won't be disadvantaged. They start right from the beginning. Having done business studies or economics in Year 11 and 12 might help though. Most people who do economics at school said they found the introductory economics subject easier. I personally found it OK, not having done economics in Year 11 and 12, and I still managed a decent mark for the effort I put in, so it should be fine.

As my economics lecturer said a couple of years ago - people who did high school economics tended to do WORSE than those with no knowledge of economics, as they become complacent and lazy thinking they know all their stuff.
