Hi, i was wondering if anyone knows the common types of reactions (eg combustion, netuarlisation etc etc) and the reactants and products formed.. i would love them in generic if possible like Acid + Base ---> Salt + Water (even i know that one :p)

Thanks :D

"Their" not there

Acid + carbonate => CO2 + H2O + salt
Acid + metal => salt + H2

N/A
heat of combustion, general formula:

carbon-based fuel + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O

esterification:

alkanol* + alkanoic acid** ---> alkyl* alkanoate** + H2O
[NB: * and ** refers to which chemical names which prefix.]

incomplete combustion
carbon-based fueld + (less)O2 --> CO + H2O
carbonbased fuel + (even less) O2 --> C + H2O

catalytic cracking
long-chained alkane --> shorter chained alkanes + ethene/propene (zeolite catalyst)

steam cracking
alkane (eg ethane) --> ethene + h2

u should know specifically; fermentation, synthesis of ammonia, hydration/dehydration of ethene, polymerisation, ionisation of acids, the reactions of amphiprotic species, etc... +.+ i can't remember any more.. i guess these arne't really 'general'~... but u should know dem.

umm....H2O + H2O <-> H3O+ + OH-
Thats the most useful one for me. the selfionisation of water.
pH = -logH+
the pH of a specific H+ quantity.

i thought we didn't have to know catalytic cracking and steam cracking?
and i've also never seen it asked in a trial or hsc :eek:

im not sure about steam cracking, but we definetly need to know about catlytic cracking.

first dot point, know synthesis of ethylene from fractions of petroleum, doesnt specify which so i assume u need 2 know both

fair enough. know both. but i know they've asked about catalytic cracking before, so its not out of the picture. one of the multiple choice ones i think.

lol. i think gloss is the wrong word. but i get your meaning. i dont think they thinkits THAT important, but i COULD be worth a couple of marks. i'd be really surprised it it was more than that.
